Rapidz snap losing streak with win

(OTTAWA, ON) Monday, July 21, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz, currently on a three-game losing skid look to rebound in the first game of a three-game series against the Atlantic City Surf on Monday night.

In the end, the Surf won 7-3 thanks to a stellar pitching performance by Atlantic City's Rory Shortell. Shortell (3-2) went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits, walking one and striking out four for the win. For the Rapidz, Noel Baca III (1-7) was credited with the loss pitching 6.1 innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Jose de los Santos and Jabe Bergeron singled to place runners on the corners, followed by de los Santos scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Rapidz lead after one inning.

The Surf answered back scoring two runs in the top of the third. After loading the bases, Clyde Williams hit a two-out single to score two runs for a 2-1 Surf lead heading into the bottom of the third.

With one swing, the newly acquired Rapid Mike Muscato tied the game at two, hitting a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to even the game after five innings.

The visiting team retook the lead after Josh Burns hit a two-RBI double to score two runners to lead 4-2 after six. The Surf added three more in the seventh thanks to a two-RBI triple by Anthony Granato and an RBI by William Plaza for a commanding 7-2 Surf lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. The Rapidz added one more run but it wasn't enough as the Surf took game one 7-3.

The second game of the three-game series will take place Tuesday, July 22 at 7:05 pm and will feature Brian Rodaway (5-5, 3.09 ERA) starting for the Surf against Adam Hawes (3-6, 5.52 ERA) for the Rapidz. Tomorrow will also be "Gun's ‘N Hoses Night" at Rapidz Stadium which will honour local police, firefighters and paramedics.
