Cox Named Can-Am League's Pitcher of the Week

Cheshire, Conn. - PA-SportsTicker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has selected Atlantic City Surf lefthanded starter Adam Cox as the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 14-20.
Cox had a pair of superb outings on the week, garnering two of the Surf's four victories. On Wednesday, the Valdosta, Ga., native pitched eight shutout innings against New Jersey, allowing four hits and striking out eight as Atlantic City blanked the Jackals, 2-0, to complete the series sweep. On Sunday, he improved his record to 7-2 by limiting Quebec's league-best offense to one run on three hits in seven innings of work, again fanning eight, as the Surf drilled the Capitales, 11-3.
The 28-year-old is currently 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA and 58 strikeouts in the month of July, and leads the circuit with 92 K's this season, 20 more than any other pitcher in the league. Cox's 2.24 season ERA is good for fourth in the league, while his seven victories tie him for third.
2008 marks his fifth season in independent baseball. In 2007, Cox was named the United League's Pitcher of the Year by going 12-2 with a 2.38 ERA for Alexandria, before being sold to the Boston Red Sox organization, where he spent the month of August with single-A Lancaster of the California League.
Originally selected by the Cleveland organization in the fourth round out of Darton (Ga.) College, Cox played the 2000 and 2002 seasons in the Indians' system, but was sidelined due to injury for all of 2001 and 2003.
It marks the second time this season that a Surf player has earned weekly honors. DH/1B Clyde Williams was named Batter of the Week for his performance from June 2-8.
Ottawa's Jabe Bergeron was tabbed as this week's Batter of the Week, hitting .417 with two home runs, four doubles and five RBI in six games.
