MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis garnered their first shutout of the year with a 9-0 win over Portland in the series opener at AutoZone Park Tuesday night.
Mark Shorey put the Redbirds on the board with his first home run of the year in the second inning, sending a three-run shot into the right field seats. Shorey's RBI-double in the sixth extended the lead and Amaury Cazana's single scored Shorey for a five-run lead. The âBirds tacked on four more runs in the seventh with Mark Hamilton's double driving in two runs and Bryan Anderson's RBI-double capping the rally. Shorey finished the night with four RBI and Hamilton scored three runs to lead Memphis. Craig Stansberry led the Beavers with three hits.
Memphis starter P.J. Walters earned his first win of the year in his second start with 5.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander fanned six and scattered four hits before three Redbirds relievers finished off the shutout. Portland starter Matt Buschmann took the loss giving up three runs on four hits over four innings.
The âBirds and Beavers play tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Former Ole Miss Rebel Lance Lynn will toe the rubber for Memphis against Portland's Sean Gallagher, who will be on a rehab start for San Diego.
