Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Lakewood, NJ- After six straight wins, the Shorebirds find themselves in a two-game losing skid following Friday night's 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Lakewood BlueClaws. Lakewood earned its 15th victory in its last 18 games behind more early offense and a solid effort from the bullpen.
The BlueClaws jumped on Delmarva early again, scoring in the first for the second straight day. After Derrick Mitchell's one out double, he advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Dominic Brown's sacrifice fly to give the BlueClaws an early 1-0 lead.
Beginning a game of catch-up, Delmarva tied things up in the third when Matt Tucker scored on Ryan Adams' RBI ground out. The game was not even for long, though, as the BlueClaws began the home half of the third with a solo home run. Joel Naughton's first dinger of the year gave Lakewood a 2-1 edge, and the Claws added another run in the inning to up their lead to 3-1.
While the Shorebirds came back from two runs down again to tie the game at three in the fourth, that would be Delmarva's final comeback of the night. After Lakewood scored three times in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead, the Shorebirds only managed one more run, a solo shot by Kieron Pope, off the BlueClaws bullpen over the final four innings.
Sergio Escalona earned the win in relief. Escalona replaced starter Julian Sampson with two outs in the fourth and fired two and one-third innings, allowing just one hit (Pope's solo homer). Ben Pfinsgraff tossed two scoreless innings, shutting down the Birds in the seventh and the eighth to pave the way for Jared Simon's tenth save of the season.
The Shorebirds received another great effort from their bullpen as Brian Parker replaced starter Tony Butler with one out in the fifth. Parker tossed a season-high three and two-thirds scoreless innings, however the runs charged to Butler were too plentiful to be overcome.
Lakewood leap frogs Delmarva in the standings with the win. Lake County remains in first by two games ahead of the BlueClaws, two and a half in front of the Shorebirds with ten games remaining in the quest for the first half championship.
