Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Taking advantage of another spectacular start from lefthander Nathan Nery, the Shorebirds held off the BlueClaws 2-1 in the season finale on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Nery allowed just a single unearned run over seven and two-thirds sensational innings, paving the way for Delmarva's 78th victory of season. Only twice in the Shorebirds' 13-year organizational history have they won more games than they did in 2008.

The Birds broke through off Lakewood starter Chance Chapman in the third inning. After Chapman retired the first seven batters he faced, Jedidiah Stephen singled and Pedro Florimon doubled to put two runners in scoring position. With Paco Figueroa batting, a wild pitch allowed Stephen to score the game's first run. Simultaneously, Florimon advanced to third. Figueroa walked and Tyler Henson struck out, but Joe Nowicki came through with a two-out base hit to bring home Florimon from third and give Delmarva the 2-0 lead.

Florimon finished the game 2-2 with a walk to raise his batting average to a season-high .223. Anthony Martinez also registered multiple base knocks for the Birds in the finale.

Nery, entering the game with consecutive scoreless inning streak of 15 innings, threw seven and two-thirds innings before allowing an unearned run in the top of the eighth. With a runner at first and two outs, Nery had Derrick Mitchell picked off first base. Caught in a rundown, Mitchell collided with first-baseman Anthony Martinez, and the umpire ruled that Martinez obstructed the path of Mitchell, awarding Mitchell second base. The next batter, Matt Rizzotti, singled to score Lakewood's only run.

In the ninth inning, Shorebird reliever Hank Williamson surrendered back-to-back singles to Michael Durant and Travis Mattair to begin the frame. He retired the next three batters in order, however, and the Shorebirds garnered their 24th one-run victory of the year.

The 78 wins were the most in a season for Delmarva in 10 years. The Shorebirds won 81 times in 1998.
