Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Lake County Captains (34-36) scored six times in the sixth inning to over power and defeat the Hagerstown Suns (27-42) on Monday afternoon.
With the loss the Suns fell to 61-78 on the season, a six game improvement from the 2007 squad.
Terrence Engles took the mound for the Suns and pitched five innings of work and allowed five runs and struck out six. Engles had one of his better starts before he found trouble in the sixth.
Mark Thompson led off the game with a deep double to left and later scored on a Matt McBride RBI single to put the Captains ahead early.
The Suns answered back in the first as Jesus Valdez smacked a two run shot over the right field wall to give the Suns a 2-1 edge. It was Valdez third home run this season.
In the second, Captains first basemen Chris Nash tied the game at two with a solo home run, his fifth. Nash finished the afternoon with three hits and four RBI. After Nash's home run, Engles took command as he retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced.
Lake County starter Ryan Miller (8-7) found trouble in the Suns half of the third as he allowed four straight hits and two runs to come across for Hagerstown. Robby Jacobsen and Garrett Bass each picked up an RBI in the inning.
Mark Gildea's RBI double added one more run for the Suns in the fifth but it was the last time the Suns saw the lead.
Six Captains runs blew the game open as Lake County combined for four singles and two doubles in the sixth. Three runs were charged to Engles, two off of reliever Jamie Lehman (1-3), and one off of Ryan Harrison.
After Lake County added three more runs to give them twelve on the afternoon, the Suns had a chance to tie the game in the eighth.
Valerio Heredia, Jose Lozada, and Sean Rooney all scored after a series of walks and hits. The Suns were down by four with the bases loaded for Gildea and Bryan Miller but both struck out to end the Suns threat.
Justin Phillabaum finished out the pitching year for the Suns as he retired all three men he faced in the ninth.
The Suns went quietly in the bottom half as Paolo Espino picked up his first save this season.
