Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends suffered a variety of heart-breaking losses on their way to a 45-93 season, so an extra-inning walk-off loss seems a fitting cap to a disappointing season. Thomas Hickman ended the Legends season with no outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the Greensboro Grasshoppers a 7-6 victory in the finale of the 2008 season.
Lexington started the scoring with a single run in the first inning. Chris Jackson tripled with one out in the frame and later scored on Eric Taylor's sacrifice fly.
Michael Stanton gave Greensboro the lead in the third on a two-run blast to left field. The home run was Stanton's 39th of the season and sixth against the Legends.
Brandon Barnes doubled home Russell Dixon in the fifth inning to tie the game. Bryan Brown followed Barnes's double with an RBI-single to center to give Lexington the lead.
The Legends would add two more runs in the sixth inning and a sixth run of the game in the seventh. Eric Taylor tied the career-hits record for the Lexington Legends with a double to lead off the sixth. Taylor later scored on Russell Dixon's ground-rule double. Jonathan Fixler followed with an RBI-double of his own to score Dixon.
Craig Corrado singled to lead off the seventh and stole second base. The steal was Corrado's fourty-third of the season, third most by a Legend in one year. Chris Jackson singled to center, moving Corrado to third, and Taylor broke the career-hits record with an RBI-single to center field.
The Grasshoppers closed the gap with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jose Duran walked Michael Stanton with the bases loaded, Matt Dominguez drove Osvaldo Martinez home with a groundout and Thomas Hickman scored on an error from Corrado.
Hunter Mense reached on a throwing error from Bryan Brown to lead off the ninth inning and moved to second on a wild pitch from Duran. Martinez reach on an infield single to short and Mense moved to third on the play. Ryan Curry then brought Mense home with a groundout to first to send the game into extra innings.
The two teams traded scoreless inning until the 12th inning when Hickman ended the game and the season with his 15th home run of the season.
Carlos Ladeuth took the loss in the Legends' finale after surrendering one run in two innings, and Steven Cishek earned his third win of the season with two scoreless innings.
