Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
COLUMBIA, SC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (25-30) began the month of September in impressive fashion as they defeated the Columbia Fireflies (27-30) by a final score of 13-3.
Delmarva scored in the opening inning for the third-straight game as TT Bowens plated Mac Horvath from third base on an infield single, putting the Shorebirds ahead 1-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Fireflies tied the game with an RBI single by Trevor Werner to score Daniel Vasquez, making it a 1-1 game.
With the game still 1-1 entering the fourth, the Shorebirds would break the game open by scoring six runs, started by Terrin Vavra who brought home two runs on a single. Delmarva then loaded the bases for Matthew Etzel who delivered by driving in all three runners with a triple to open up a 6-1 lead for the 'Birds. Etzel would score moments later on a wild pitch, capping off a six-run inning that put Delmarva ahead 7-1.
The Fireflies would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Vasquez as Jared Dickey scored, trimming the Delmarva lead to 7-2.
The Shorebirds would instantly get that run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Tavaian Josenberger to plate Mac Horvath, extending the lead back to six at 8-2.
Stiven Acevedo then gave Delmarva their largest lead of the night as he hit his second home run of the series over the left-field wall, giving the Shorebirds a 9-2 advantage.
Delmarva would then drop the hammer by scoring four more runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Angel Tejada, a two-run single by Stiven Acevedo, and a fielder's choice off the bat of Jake Cunningham that plated Tejada, upping the Shorebirds lead to 13-2.
The Fireflies would get a run on a homer in the eighth from Trevor Werner, but it was not nearly enough as Delmarva would cruise to a 13-3 on Friday night.
Teddy Sharkey (1-0) earned his first professional victory in relief by throwing two scoreless innings. Starter Ben Hernandez (1-3) was the losing pitcher for the Fireflies.
Delmarva now gets set for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m. with Luis De Leon slated as the starter for game one. Alfred Vega will start game two, which will follow 30 minutes after game one concludes. Both innings will be seven innings long.
