
Fireflies Eliminated from Playoffs with 13-3 Loss

COLUMBIA, SC - The Fireflies allowed six runs in the fourth inning to fall behind 7-1 as they ended up dropping Friday's game at Segra Park 13-3 to the Delmarva Shorebirds.
In the fourth inning, the Shorebirds hit around, scoring six runs to take a 7-1 lead over Columbia. After recording the first out of the inning, Ben Hernandez (L, 1-3) allowed five straight Delmarva hitters to reach, capping it off with a bases-clearing three-run triple from Matthew Etzel to push the Shorebirds' lead to 6-1 at the time. Etzel came home from a Wesley Scott wild pitch.
The second big inning came in the eighth. Angel Tejada started the scoring, singling to plate Mac Horvath, who went 4-4 with two walks, scoring five runs against Columbia. Next, Stiven Acevedo singled to left to plate Tavian Josenberger and Matthew Etzel to make the lead 12-2. Finally, Jake Cunningham reached on a force out, allowing Tejada to come around.
In the home half of the eighth, Trevor Werner launched a moon shot over the left field foul pole to cut the lead to 10. It was Werner's sixth homer in the last nine games.
Columbia struck back for one in the bottom of the fifth. Jared Dickey hit a soft single to second and moved to second on a throwing error from Terrin Vavra, he advanced to third on a flyout and scored from a Daniel Vazquez sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-2.
The Fireflies tied the game in the home-half of the first. Daniel Vazquez and Carson Roccaforte led the game off with back-to-back walks and then Vazquez came around on a Trevor Werner single down the right field line.
Delmarva started hot out of the gates. Ben Hernandez walked Mac Horvath and Tavien Josenburger with one out and then with a pair of outs, TT Bowen hit a base knock, scoring Horvath to take a 1-0 lead.
The Fireflies continue their series with a doubleheader tomorrow evening at Segra Park with first pitch of game one set for 4:30 pm. The Fireflies send RHP Felix Arronde (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the hill in game one and in game two, RHP Emmanuel Reyes (1-4, 4.50 ERA) takes the bump. On the other side, LHP Juan Rojas (1-2, 6.38 ERA) takes the hill for game two.
