Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds managed just two hits as the Lakewood BlueClaws won game three, 5-1, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Wednesday night. The Shorebirds have lost three games in a row and have scored just three runs through the first three games of the series.
Shorebirds starter David Baker and Lakewood starter Jesse Biddle were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five innings. Each pitcher allowed just one hit.
Lakewood broke through the sixth inning for three runs. Edgar Duran reached on a one out single. Then, Bill Rice singled to advance Duran to third. On a third-to-first fake by David Baker, Rice was hung up between first and second. During the rundown, Duran sprinted to the plate and hooked around Michael Ohlman to give Lakewood a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Carlos Alonso hit a two-run homer to left field to increase the lead to 3-0.
Baker scattered five hits and allowed three runs over seven innings. He retired 14 consecutive batters between the first and sixth innings.
Lakewood tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth. Jim Murphy doubled to the left field corner to plate Drew Hillman and Anthony Hewitt singled up the middle to score Murphy.
After Riley Hornback doubled to open the first inning, the Shorebirds went without another hit until the ninth inning. Hornback and Brenden Webb drew walks from relief pitcher Mike McGuire to open the ninth. Then, Ty Kelly hit a chopper into center field to cut the deficit to 5-1. Michael Ohlman grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.
Cameron Roth hurled two innings of relief. He surrendered three hits and two runs.
