Lexington Legends News Release
A grand slam by Dustin Garneau in the 10th inning provided the winning margin as the Asheville Tourists defeated the Lexington Legends 12-8 Wednesday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Garneau's blast was the second bases-loaded homer in the game by a Tourists batter. In the fifth inning, Mark Tracy's slam put the Tourists in front 6-0 before the Legends rallied.
Lexington's Emilio King went five-for-five, including a game-tying three-run homer in the eighth inning.
Asheville leadoff hitter Brett Tanos set the tone with a home run on the second pitch of the game. The Tourists added a run in the third on a single by Cristhian Adames, a wild pitch, a walk to Kyle Parker and an RBI single by Avery Barnes.
Parker led off the fifth with a single. Barnes followed with a single, and Garneau reached on an error by Lexington third baseman Mike Kvasnicka, loading the bases. Tracy launched a 420-foot shot over the bleachers in left field, and Asheville led 6-0.
Tracy's RBI single in the sixth made it 7-0 before the Legends came back with home run power of their own. Ruben Sosa reached second when Asheville starter Josh Mueller bobbled Sosa's ground ball and then threw past first base. Mueller was charged with two errors on the play. Domingo Santana followed with his 10th home run of the season and third in eight games with Lexington since joining the Legends as part of a trade between the Houston and Philadelphia organizations. Telvin Nash struck out, but Tyler Burnett walked, and Kvasnicka reached first on Parker's error in right field. Ben Orloff delivered a three-run homer that just cleared the fence in left to cut the lead to 7-5.
The Tourists added a run in the seventh on Dominic Altobelli's single, a walk to Tanos, a single by Adames and a sacrifice fly by Parker.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kvasnicka walked, Orloff singled and Roberto Pena struck out before King, a right-handed batter, homered to right field, tying the score at 8-8.
It was still 8-8 in the 10th when Adames drew a leadoff walk from Legends' reliever Brian Streilein. Parker singled, moving Adames to second. Barnes bunted, and Streilein's throw to third was too late to get Adames, leaving the bases loaded. Garneau followed with a drive over the bleachers in left field to give the Tourists their winning margin.
Bruce Kern (5-6) who entered the game in the ninth inning and worked through the 10th, got the win. Streilein (5-4) took the loss. Asheville has won two of three in the series, which concludes Thursday. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
