Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - Adam Duvall showed why he may be the league's top MVP candidate with his display of clutch hitting on Wednesday night. His ninth-inning RBI single brought home the winning run in a 3-2 Augusta GreenJackets win over the Kannapolis Intimidators. With the win and Savannah's loss earlier on Wednesday, the GreenJackets moved to within a game of first place.

Down 2-1 in the ninth inning, Joel Weeks drew a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. Two quick outs dampened Augusta's spirits before Chris Lofton drew a two-out walk to put the winning run on base. Bobby Haney stepped up and delivered a single up the middle to score pinch-runner Carlos Willoughby and tie the game at two.

The Haney single brought the team's RBI leader, Duvall, to the plate with runners at second and third with two outs. Duvall singled on a 1-0 pitch from Terrence Marin to plate Lofton with the game-winner and give the GreenJackets their eighth walkoff win of the season and Duvall his 85th RBI of 2011. The GreenJackets won the third one-run game of the series as Kannapolis has won by a single run in each of the last two games.

The Intimidators broke first ice in a pitchers' duel between Shawn Sanford and Matt Heidenreich in the fifth inning. A leadoff walk put a man on first, but back-to-back strikeouts dampened the threat. Rafael Vera reached on an error to extend the inning before Keenyn Walker's seeing-eye single up the middle brought home a run to make it 1-0. On the play, Lofton's throw to third went into the dugout to score a second run and give Kannapolis a 2-0 lead.

Sanford continued through seven innings, allowing just two unearned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five. It was the second straight start this homestand where Sanford's left the game without any run support while holding the opposition to without an earned run. He limited Charleston to one unearned run in eight innings on Friday.

The GreenJackets got a run back in the eighth on Josh Mazzola's RBI double to make it a 2-1 game. Mazzola was thrown out at third trying to stretch that double into a triple and the GreenJackets wouldn't score again in the eighth, setting up Duvall's heroics in the ninth.

Austin Fleet (8-5) retired six of the seven he faced in two scoreless innings, striking out all six hitters he retired - four on called third strikes - to get the win. Chris Bassitt (2-1) took the loss after allowing a hit and two walks in the ninth.

The GreenJackets send Taylor Rogers (10-9, 2.90) to the mound in the series and homestand finale on Thursday as they try for the series split with Kannapolis. Spencer Arroyo (9-8, 3.52) will oppose on the penultimate Thirsty Thursday of the season, with dollar domestic drafts available courtesy of the Vue Lounge and 95 Rock. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
