Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds lost the series opener to Hagerstown, 13-7 on Monday evening. The Suns burst out of the gates, using two home runs in a seven-run first inning. It was the most runs surrendered by the Shorebirds in a single inning this season. Delmarva fought back but the hole was too much to dig out of.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Matt Swynenberg will start the middle game of the three-game set for Hagerstown. Swynenberg was just added to the Suns' roster today, having previously appeared for the Auburn Doubledays this year. The 25-year-old last pitched with Hagerstown back in 2011, going 6-3 with a 3.68 ERA with 30 appearances (10 starts). The Washington Nationals drafted Swynenberg back in 2009 in the 28th round out of Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles have lived and died by the home run lately, and on Mon- day night, the O's lived well with an 11-3 beatdown of the New York Yankees. Chris Davis, Nelson Cruz and Jonathan Schoop all homered in the victory. Manny Machado left the game after sprain- ing his right knee. The severity of the injury is to be determined.

THE IRON IS HOT: 18 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
