Asheville Tourists News Release

Savannah, GA--In spite of issuing a season-high 11 walks on Tuesday night, the Asheville Tourists pitching staff helped lead the T's to a 3-2 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats. Zach Jemiola, Trent Blank, and Trent Daniel combined to toss a two-hitter in which both of Savannah's hits were misplayed fly balls.

The Sand Gnats had plenty of base-runners throughout the game due to the high volume of bases on balls the Tourists surrendered but were only able to take advantage in the bottom of the second. Colton Plaia led off the inning with a double that Dillon Thomas misjudged in left. After consecutive walks loaded the bases, Yeixon Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The next batter, Champ Stuart, lifted a fly ball into shallow left-center that ended up dropping between Raimel Tapia and Thomas. Johnathon Johnson scored on the play. Those were the only two hits of the game for the home team.

Robert Whalen limited the Tourists to just four singles through the first seven innings, but in the top of the eighth Asheville finally broke through. Wilfredo Rodriguez doubled with one out and Emerson Jimenez legged out an infield single. Tapia then lifted a double over the head of Patrick Biondi in left plating both runners.

Another infield single followed by an intentional walk brought Correlle Prime to the plate with the bases loaded. Prime hit a soft ground ball to short off reliever Akeel Morris and Tapia raced home on the fielder's choice to put the Tourists in front 3-2.

Daniel walked two batters in the bottom of the ninth, but induced a fly out off the bat of Dominic Smith for the game's final out. Daniel earned his 12th save of the season in the process. Blank worked three innings in relief of Jemiola to run his record on the season to 5-0 and extend his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 15. Whalen suffered his first loss of the season for the Gnats.

The rubber match between Asheville and Savannah will take place on Wednesday night at 7:05pm with the series tied at one game apiece.
