Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - On the night the Red Sox World Series trophy made its way to Fluor Field, the Greenville Drive (18-35, 52-70) took a page right out of the 2013 Red Sox playbook, getting a big hit early and solid pitching en route to a 4-3 victory over the Rome Braves on Wednesday. With the win, the Drive clinched a victory of the three-game series.
The Drive jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Steve Janas (2-5). Manuel Margot singled to begin the frame, swiped second and third, and came in when Wendell Rijo crushed a two-run shot off the lightpole in left-center for his ninth homer of the year.
Rome answered quickly in the top of the second, as Daniel McGrath (5-5) issued a leadoff walk before Ross Wilson's two-run homer to left tied the game.
That lead lasted until the third, when the Drive brought home two more against Janas to take the lead for good. Carlos Coste led off with an infield single and moved to third on Margot's laser double off the Monster. Tzu-Wei Lin followed with an RBI groundout to tie the game, and Margot later scored on a Rome error at second base to make the score 4-2.
The Braves plated a run in the fourth when Wilson doubled and later scored on a 6-4-3 double play.
McGrath gave the Drive a quality start to pick up the victory, as he allowed three runs in six innings with five strikeouts. German Taveras came in and slammed the door on the Braves over the final three innings to record his third save of the season.
In addition to his homer, Rijo also singled and stole three bases and finished the evening 2-3 with two RBI. Margot added a pair of hits and a pair of stolen bases to continue his scorching hot August, where he is hitting .462 in 12 games.
Wilson had two hits and two RBI for Rome, and Sean Godfrey and Alejandro Piloto also collected two hits.
The Drive will begin a four-game road series against the Savannah Sand Gnats on Thursday night at 7:05. RH Ty Buttrey (0-3, 8.28) starts the opener for the Drive, while the Sand Gnats will send RH Logan Taylor (0-3, 3.64) to the mound.
