Intimidators Secure Sweep with 7-Run Seventh

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (August 13, 2014) - The Intimidators erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning en route to a 9-5 win over the Lexington Legends, clinching a series sweep for Kannapolis, on Wednesday afternoon at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.

Shortstop Eddy Alvarez, the Olympic speed-skating silver medalist from the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, paced a 12-hit game for the Intimidators' offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Danny Hayes, who served as the designated hitter for the afternoon, went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two walks to raise his league-leading walk total to 63.

Kannapolis (56-64, 27-26 Second Half) overcame three Lexington home runs to lock up the team's first sweep since June 27-30 against Charleston. The Intimidators trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Toby Thomas drove in Hayes to tie the game with one out, and T.J. Williams followed with a go-ahead 2-run triple. Alvarez added his second RBI-single of the day. A Legends error along with base-hit by Hayes in his second plate appearance of the inning chased reliever Luis Rico from the game. Chevy Clarke scored one more run on a passed ball for a 9-3 lead before reliever Andrew Brockett was able to end the inning.

Jeff McKenzie (3-4) picked up the win for Kannapolis, opening with three scoreless frames before allowing a Frank Schwindel 2-run home run (19) with no outs in the eighth to pull the Legends within four, 9-5.

Intimidators starter Chris Freudenberg struck out a season-high-tying seven batters over 4.0 innings, matching his highest output from a June start with Advanced Rookie Great Falls. He gave up three runs on four hits, including solo home runs by Dominique Taylor and Elier Hernandez, while walking one.

Rico (3-8) took the loss for the Legends, allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over 2 and 2/3 relief innings.

Lexington led 2-0 before Kannapolis chipped away with runs in the second and third innings to tie the game, but Hernandez led off the fourth with a go-ahead home run, putting the Legends ahead 3-2 until the Intimidators big frame in the seventh. It was the second time this series Kannapolis scored seven runs in an inning against the Legends, as the Intimidators also plated seven in the third inning of Monday's series opener.
