Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds won the final meeting of the season with the Lakewood BlueClaws by a 6-3 final score. Delmarva took four of five games on the road to jump back over .500 on the season, at 60-59. The Shorebirds finished the season series having won 18 of 27 matchups with the last-place BlueClaws.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Lucas Giolito will start the series opener for the Hagerstown Suns. Giolito has lived up the hype as the Nationals' top prospect, going 8-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 18 starts for Hagerstown. The tall right-hander has 99 strikeouts in 88 innings this season. Giolito has won six consecutive decisions, dating back to June 26th. In three starts against Delmarva, Giolito has gone 1-0 with two runs allowed in 13 1/3 innings.
19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.
ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles failed to complete a sweep against the St. Louis Cardi- nals, losing 8-3 in the finale on Sunday. Kevin Gausman suffered the loss for Baltimore, and the offense squandered big opportunities early. The O's are now 67-50 on the year, with a five-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays and six games up on the New York Yankees.
THE IRON IS HOT: 18 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
