Hagerstown Suns News Release
About last game... The Hagerstown Suns (32-18, 76-44) scored one run in five different innings on Sunday evening as they completed a four-game sweep of the Kannapolis Intimidators (24-26, 53-64) with a 5-3 win. The sweep is the Suns first since a three-game sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds from June 2 - 4.
Trailing 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth, Hagerstown managed to plate a run in each of its final four frames. In the fifth 2B Brennan Middleton drew a two-out walk. He advanced from first to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, and scored on a single up the middle by CF Rafael Bautista.
In the sixth the Suns broke the 2-2 tie thanks to an RBI double by catcher Austin Chubb. The double came with two outs, and was Chubb's fourth double of the season. It was again a two-out double that stretched Hagerstown's lead to 4-2 in the seventh. This time it was LF Narciso Mesa who drove in the run with his 10th double of the year.
The Intimidators cut their deficit to one again in the top of the eighth. Right fielder Chevy Clarke drew a walk to begin the frame. He then went to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a single to left by 2B Christian Stringer. A sacrifice fly by 3B Trey Michalczewski brought Clarke home from third to make it 4-3.
That's as close as Kannapolis would get thanks to an RBI single to short by RF Wilman Rodriguez with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. The Suns first run of the game had crossed the plate in the first inning on a steal of home by SS Wilmer Difo. The first two Intimidators runs came on a two-run homerun by SS Toby Thomas in the top of the fifth.
RHP Ryan Ullmann (4-1) wound up getting the win for Hagerstown. He threw two innings in relief, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out one. LHP David Napoli pitched a scoreless ninth to record his fourth save of the season. RHP Tyler Barnette (2-8) suffered the loss for Kannapolis. He threw the final 3.1 innings for the Intimidators, surrendering three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out two.
On the Mound... RHP Lucas Giolito will be heading to the hill tonight for the Suns. He is making his 19th start and appearance this season. He last threw on August 5 at West Virginia, going five innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits including one homer, while striking out five and not walking a batter. Giolito is facing Delmarva for the fourth time this season, and the third time in Salisbury. He is 1-0 against the Shorebirds and has allowed two earned runs to Delmarva on nine hits over 13.1 innings. Giolito has won each of his last six decisions. He is 5-1 on the road this year with a 2.52 ERA in 10 starts. Overall this year he has pitched 88.0 innings, surrendering 27 runs (23 earned) on 61 hits including seven homers. He has walked 26 and has struck out 99. Tonight he goes up against LHP Luis Gonzalez for Delmarva. Gonzalez is making his 14th start and 15th appearance this season. He last pitched on August 5 at home against Greensboro, tossing 5.1 innings and giving up six earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four. The six runs he allowed are the most he has given up in a game this season. This is his second time facing the Suns this season. In his first outing against Hagerstown at Municipal Stadium on June 28, Gonzalez threw three innings and surrendered four earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three. That was his shortest start of the year and he drew a no decision. At home this season Gonzalez is 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA in seven games (six starts). Overall this year he has pitched 66.2 innings, allowing 25 runs (21 earned) on 52 hits while walking 22 and striking out 62.
The deal with Delmarva... The Suns and Shorebirds are playing the 21st of 23 games against each other this season, and the 11th of 13 that will take place in Salisbury. The Suns are 11-9 against Delmarva this year, including a 4-6 record in Salisbury. The Shorebirds are 22-28 in the second half, good for sixth place in the Northern Division second half standings. Delmarva is currently fourth in team batting with a .270 average and fourth in pitching with a team ERA of 3.64.
Yezzo Streaking... Jimmy Yezzo is on a 10-game hit streak. He is hitting .463 during the streak
