Shorebirds Game Notes at Hickory

August 15, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds won a rare low-scoring game at L.P. Frans Stadium with a 1-0 final against the Hickory Crawdads. It was the Shorebirds' 10th shutout victory of the year, as Janser Severino, Williams Louico and Donnie Hart combined to shut down the Crawdads. The only run came on an RBI double by Austin Wynns, scoring Conor Bierfeldt on a close play at home.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Anyelo Leclerc will start game two for Hickory on Friday evening. Leclerc has primarily been a reliever for the Crawdads, going 2-3 with a 2.75 ERA. The right-hander has made 19 appearances (6 starts), mostly getting the ball in spot start or doubleheaders. Leclerc has faced Delmarva as a reliever on three separate occasions, tossing seven innings while allow- ing only one run.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles scored four runs in the 8th inning for a 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees, completing a two-game sweep of a rain-shortened series. Jonathan Schoop hit a game-tying home run, then Adam Jones launched a go-ahead bomb. The O's now have a 69-50 record on the year and a 7 1/2 game lead over the division.

RACE FOR A BATTING TITLE: Two Shorebirds are in the running for the league batting title at year's end. Chance Sisco (.337) and Drew Dosch (.324) are both in the top 4 in the South Atlantic League among qualifying hitters in batting average. Michael Benjamin of the Asheville Tourists currently leads the league with a .341 mark, but he is currently on the disabled list and likely would not have enough plate appearances to qualify at the end of the season.
