
Shorebirds End Four-Game Skid with 6-2 Win

Lakewood, NJ - Delmarva Shorebirds (6-6) pitchers Matt Taylor and Mychal Givens held the Lakewood BlueClaws (3-9) to four total hits in a 6-2 win on Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. With the win, the Shorebirds ended a four-game losing streak.
The Shorebirds used three Lakewood errors to build a 3-0 lead in the first inning. George Barber hit a lead off single. Tucker Nathans then grounded to third and Willie Carmona threw wild to first to put runners at second and third. Then, Creede Simpson singled to right field, to extend his hit streak to ten games and give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Joel Hutter hit a hard ground ball under the glove of first baseman Art Charles to score Simpson.
In the third, the Shorebirds tacked on a run to build a 4-0 lead. Simpson singled to left field to open the inning and then scored on a double to right-center field by Nik Balog.
The Shorebirds added a run in the fourth inning. Adrian Marin led off with a single to center field. Later in the inning, Barber singled through the left side to score Marin to run the lead to 5-0.
In the sixth inning, Chase Weems doubled to left field and Gregory Lorenzo singled to center to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Lakewood trimmed the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Angelo Mora doubled in Chace Numata, who led off by drawing a walk. The second run scored on a groundout to short by Carmona.
Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor held the BlueClaws to four hits and two runs over a season long seven innings to earn his first win since May 22. Taylor struck out five and walked just one batter.
Mychal Givens entered in the eighth inning and tossed two scoreless and hitless innings to close out the BlueClaws.
Barber and Weems each had three hits while Simpson recorded two hits.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play game two of the series on Tuesday, July 2 at 7:05pm. RHP Parker Bridwell is the scheduled starter.
