Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (7-5, 45-34) opened their series with the West Virginia Power (8-4, 45-37) Monday evening with a 6-2 victory. The win was the Suns sixth of the season over the Power and improved their home record to 21-14.
Leading 1-0, Hagerstown opened the game up in the fourth. First baseman Shawn Pleffner started things off with a single to right field, then advanced to second on a passed ball by catcher Francisco Diaz. After RF Brandon Miller popped out, Pleffner went to third on a groundout by CF Will Piwnica-Worms. Left fielder Estarlin Martinez brought home Pleffner with a double to left field. Martinez scored on a single by SS Stephen Perez, which was followed up by a single by catcher Craig Manuel. The pair advanced to third on a wild pitch by RHP John Kuchno (3-4). Center fielder Narciso Mesa rounded out the scoring in the frame by driving home both Perez and Manuel to make it 5-0.
The Suns got on the board first in the first inning. Second baseman Tony Renda led off with an infield single to short. After 3B Khayyan Norfork walked, Pleffner singled to right to load the bases for Miller. Miller would ground into a fielder's choice, allowing Renda to score and giving the Suns the early lead.
Down 6-0, West Virginia would break the shutout in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, DH Jordan Steranka singled to right field, scoring Diaz and CF Barrett Barnes to make it 6-2, but that's all the Power would get as the score would hold up until the end.
LHP Nick Lee (2-2) earned the win for Hagerstown. Lee pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out nine. Kuchno took the loss for the Power, pitching six innings, allowing four earned runs on eleven hits and two walks while striking out one. RHP Derek Self notched his first save of the season by tossing 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk.
The Suns and Power will continue their series on Tuesday, July 2. RHP Pedro Encarnacion (5-4) will get the nod for Hagerstown, making his fourteenth start of the season. RHP Tyler Glasnow (4-1) will take the mound for West Virginia, making his sixteenth start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
