Luis Diaz Named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week

Greenville, SC - After a pair of outstanding outings, Greenville Drive right-handed pitcher Luis Diaz was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for June 24-30, the league announced on Monday.

For the week, Diaz posted a 2-0 record with an ERA of 0.69. In 13 innings of work, he allowed just six hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out 15 batters.

The native of Valencia, Venezuela began the week with a terrific six innings at home against Charleston on the 25th. He gave up five hits, one run and two walks with six strikeouts.

He followed that start with another gem in Kannapolis on the 30th, as he took a perfect game into the sixth inning before allowing a leadoff hit. Overall, he worked seven shutout frames and struck out nine while giving up only one hit and one walk.

For the season, Diaz has a 3-4 record with a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances, including six starts. He has thrown 40 innings and given up 42 hits, 15 earned runs and 12 walks while punching out 38.

Diaz is the second Drive player to receive weekly honors from the South Atlantic League this season, joining second baseman Mookie Betts, who was named the league's Player of the Week for the week of May 6-12. He was also the first Drive pitcher to receive the league's Pitcher of the Week honors since left-hander Mickey Pena did it for the week of May 7-13, 2012.

The Drive begin a three-game series in Lexington on Monday night, and they will return to Fluor Field on Thursday, July 4th for a four-game set with the Savannah Sand Gnats, affiliate of the New York Mets.
