Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 1, 2013) -- Mike Marjama collected a career- high four hits and the Kannapolis Intimidators bounced back from a sluggish night at the plate to defeat the Augusta GreenJackets, 8-6, on Monday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The Intimidators pounded out 16 hits one night after managing a season-low two against Greenville.
Mike Recchia (3-0) earned the win for the Intimidators, striking out six batters over 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Stew Brase worked a four-out save (5), including a scoreless, hitless ninth inning.
Augusta starter Joe Biagini (6-2) gave up six runs on 11 hits, both season highs, in taking the loss.
Kannapolis jumped in front 2-1 in the bottom of the first thanks to Keon Barnum's game-tying triple. Marjama followed with a run-scoring single to pull the Intimidators ahead. Marjama doubled in the third inning and scored on Brent Tanner's base hit, extending the lead.
The Intimidators plated three runs in the fifth inning highlighted by Yoandy Barroso's two-out, two-run single. Kale Kiser cashed Barroso from first with a double off the wall in right field for a 6-2 lead.
Eric Grabe added an RBI-triple to score Tanner in the seventh inning, and Kiser brough Grabe home with a sac-fly for an 8-2 lead.
Brad Goldberg made his Class A debut, working 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings behind Recchia.
The GreenJackets surged for four runs off Alex Powers in the top of the eighth, pulling within two runs. Joey Rapp launched a three-run home run (2) to chase Powers from the game before Brase came in to end the inning and toss a scoreless ninth.
The Intimidators and GreenJackets continued this series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The series will wrap up Wednesday, July 3, as the Intimidators host their Independence Holiday Fireworks Show presented by the City of Kannapolis.
