Braves Steal Win from RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, SC - The Rome Braves stole a season high 10 bases en route to a 7-3 win over the Charleston RiverDogs Monday night in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 2,544 fans.

With the loss, the RiverDogs fall to 5-6 in the second half and 44-35 on the season. They are now in fourth place in the Southern Division for the second half of the season. The Braves move to 40-41 on the season and 4-8 in the second half with the victory. They remain in last place in the Southern Division for the second half of the season.

Charleston took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Cito Culver's (2-3) seventh home run of the season.

The Braves answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. After singling to center field and stealing second and third, Jose Peraza (2-3, 4 SB) scored the first Rome run on a Carlos Franco (2-4) single. Casey Kalenkosky, who walked and advanced to third on the Franco single, then scored on a wild pitch.

Rome's lead did not last long as Charleston battled back in the bottom half of the fourth. Culver started the rally with a single and was followed by a Greg Bird double. Culver then scored on a Dante Bichette, Jr. single to right field to tie the game. An Angelo Gumbs (2-4) single to right field then scored Bird and gave Charleston the lead.

In the fifth inning Rome tied the game once again. Felix Marte walked, stole second, went to third on a fly ball to center, and later scored the tying run a Peraza sacrifice bunt.

Former USC Gamecock Tyler Webb (0-1) entered the game in the sixth inning in relief of RiverDogs starting pitcher Evan Rutckyj. Rutckyj's final line was three runs on three hits, four walks, and five strikeouts in five innings of work.

In his RiverDogs debut, Webb was unable to slow down the Brave's offense. Edison Sanchez and Franco began the sixth inning with a walk and a single, respectively. They both then advanced on a passed ball. Chris Edmondson then plated both runners with a bloop single to left and gave Rome a 5-3 lead on a single to left field.

Webb was relieved in the next inning by Zach Arneson. In one inning of work Webb allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two batters as he picked up the loss in his first appearance with the RiverDogs.

The Braves added insurance runs in both the 7th and 9th innings to finish out the 7-3 win.

Frank Lafreniere (4-6) was the winning pitcher for Rome. In 5.2 innings of work, he allowed three runs on eight hits and recorded two strike outs. Eric Pfisterer entered the game with two outs in the seventh inning for the save opportunity. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowed no runs on no hits and struck out two batters as he picked up his first save of the season.

BALLPARK FUN: Each team started Canadian born pitchers on Canada Day. There were also $1 beers and hot dogs at the Ashley View Pub.

COMING UP: The second game of this three-game series against the Rome Braves is Tuesday night at 7:05. Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be making a rehab appearance with the RiverDogs. RHP Vicente Campos (1-2, 4.15 ERA) will be on the mound for Charleston and the Braves will counter with RHP Williams Perez (5-3, 3.97 ERA). It will also be 2-for-$20 Date Night presented by 96.9 The Wolf. The deal includes two tickets, two slices of pizza, two Pepsis, and a popcorn all for $20. One lucky couple will be selected to enjoy a candlelit dinner from La Fontana Italian restaurant. Seats for tomorrow's game are sold out but standing room tickets are still available for $7. Those with standing room tickets are guaranteed admission but are not guaranteed a seat.
