Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth on six straight singles, coming back to beat the Charleston RiverDogs 4-3 on Sunday afteroon at Perdue Stadium.

Trailing 3-2 against a Charleston bullpen that boasted a sub-2.00 ERA this season, Jake Ring led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit up the middle. Chris Clare follwed with a slow rolling single through the hole on the right side. Preston Palmeiro then blooped one into left center that fell for a hit, loading the bases. After a meeting on the mound, Collin Woody got under a pitch and lifted it to center for another bloop single, bringing home Ring.

Woody's single chased Trevor Lane from the game, and on the first pitch he saw from right-hander Christian Morris, Gerrion Grim knocked a single to right to score Clare and tie the game. Up came Daniel Fajardo, hit connected for a shallow fly ball that dropped in center. Palmeiro scored on Delmarva's sixth straight single, giving the Shorebirds (12-13) the 4-3 lead.

The one-run lead was all Jake Bray needed to freeze out the RiverDogs (13-12) as he sat down Oswaldo Cabrera, Leonardo Molina, and Esteven Florial in order in the ninth, sending the matinee crowd of 3,425 home happy.

Jhon Peluffo (3-0) earned the win in relief after allowing two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Lane (4-1) took the loss after surrendering all three runs in the eighth.

The Shorebirds broke the ice in the first inning as Ryan McKenna led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Clare single to make it 1-0. That lead would hold for four innings as starter Travis Seabrooke took control on the hill, getting through the first four innings on just 37 pitches.

The RiverDogs got to Seabrooke in the fifth. Diego Castillo and Isiah Gilliam drew one-out walks, and Cabrera's single plated Castillo to tie it 1-1.

Seabrooke exited after the sixth with his first quality start of the season, allowing one run on five hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out three on 79 pitches in the no-decision.

Charleston took advantage of some early wildness from Peluffo in the seventh as Gilliam and Cabrera led off with back-to-back four-pitch walks. After Molina grounded into a force at second, Florial notched a single to score Gilliam. Molina was thrown out at home on an Angel Aguilar groundball to third, but two wild pitches with Blake Rutherford up allowed Florial to scamper home and make it 3-1, setting up Delmarva's heroics in the eighth.

After going hitless in his last five games, Fajardo broke out for three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and the game-winning RBI. Clare finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, and McKenna scored his SAL-best 24th run of the season.

Florial finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI to lead the RiverDogs at the plate. starting pitcher Adonis Rosa allowed one run on four hits in five innings, walking one and striking out nine in a no-decision of his own.

The Shorebirds busted out for 11 hits, their most on the seven-game homestand. Delmarva finishes the stand 4-3 and wraps up April at 12-13.

The Shorebirds now begin a swing through South Carolina. After an off day Monday, Delmarva visits the Columbia Fireflies for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. Lefty Alex Wells (2-1, 1.00) gets the nod for the Shorebirds against Fireflies right-hander Gabriel Llanes (0-2, 3.57). First pitch is 7:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports AM 960 and the MiLB First Pitch app begins at 6:50 p.m. with Will DeBoer on the call.
