Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Salisbury, MD (August 11, 2006) -Friday night's game between the West Virginia Power and Delmarva Shorebirds was one sided for the most part with the Shorebirds dominating in every phase of the game as they beat the Power 12-3. However the game was played under protest because the home plate umpire Dan Oliver, who suffered a concussion a few days before, called the balls and strikes for the first six innings of the game, and had to leave due to illness just before the seventh inning. Power manager Mike Guerrero protested the game because he believed Oliver was not fit to start the contest.
Mark Fleisher hit a two run double in the top of the first inning to give the Shorebirds an early lead. Delmarva scored four times in the fourth inning to pull away. Ryan Finan knocked in the first run on an RBI single and Kyle Dahlberg drove in the second run with a Sacrifice Fly. With runners on second and third base, Lorenzo Scott hit a groundball up the middle of the infield, Power second baseman Mike Bell made a terrific diving stop on the ball, but his throw to first base went into the Power dugout, allowing to more runs to score. The Power scored their first run of the game on Lorenzo Cain's RBI single in the fifth inning. Delmarva answered that with Stu Musslewhite's run scoring single in the home half of the inning.
Delmarva scored three times in the sixth inning on RBI singles from Vito Chiaravalloti, Ryan Finan and Quincy Ascencion. Angel Salome ripped an RBI single in the seventh inning to make it a 10-2 contest. Chiaravalloti struck again for Delmarva in the seventh inning with a two run double. The Power scored the final run of the game on Lorenzo Cain's RBI double in the top of the ninth.
After the home plate umpire Dan Oliver left in the seventh inning, his partner Tim Bretzke took over behind home plate, Delmarva pitcher Josh Potter became the third base umpire and Delmarva outfielder Danny Figueroa became the first base umpire.
Chorye Spoone (6-7) got the win, and Steve Garrison (5-5) got the loss. The Power are 62-54 on the year and 23-24 in the second half after the loss while the Shorebirds improved to 52-61 overall and 16-30 in the second half after the win.
The Power will continue the four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Saturday night. Right hander David Hernandez (5-7, 4.18) will make the start for Delmarva and the Power will counter with right hander Will Inman (9-1, 1.48). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
