SAVANNAH, Ga. - Fourteen Sand Gnats went down on strikes as Savannah dropped its ninth straight game in a disappointing 1-0 loss to the Asheville Tourists Friday night in front of a crowd of 3,124 at Historic Grayson Stadium.

John Lannan was the tough luck loser, allowing just one run while scattering five hits in 6.1 innings. The Gnats bullpen was also solid in the loss, combining for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits. Coby Mavroulis highlighted the outing, fanning three in 1.2 frames.

Savannah and Asheville were deadlocked at zeroes through five innings until the Tourists broke through in the sixth when a walk and two singles loaded the bases with Chris Nelson's sacrifice fly, accounting for the game's only run.

The Gnats looked to rally in the bottom of the eighth when Tim Pahuta ripped a triple to right-center field, but was left stranded as Scott Shade was called out on strikes.

Asheville starter Shane Lindsay held the Gnats at bay, striking out nine batters through five innings, allowing just four hits. Savannah picked up eight hits in the game but left nine runners stranded.

Savannah and Asheville continue the series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as the Sand Gnats send right-hander Shairon Martis to the mound to face Tourists righty Chaz Roe. Saturday is Back to School Night sponsored by Livingood's and Derst Bakery with the first 1,000 fans in attendance receiving Sand Gnats lunch boxes.
