(Eastlake, OH)--Frank Herrmann picked up his second consecutive win and Max Ramirez had two RBI Friday night as the Captains enjoyed a successful homecoming with a 5-1 win over the Hickory Crawdads at Classic Park.
The Captains (26-19) began the eight-game homestand on a winning note, following an eight-game trip that saw the Captains go 5-3.
Lakewood's lead over the Captains in the SAL North remains at four games as the BlueClaws defeated Lexington, 6-0, for their 17th shutout of the season. Hickory (25-22) fell to six games out and had their four-game win streak snapped.
Ramirez, who raised his avergae with the Captains to .349, had a sacrifice fly in the first inning
Herrmann (4-5) tossed six innings and allowed four hits. He allowed only a second inning run on a triple by Brad Corley and an RBI groundout by Jason Delaney, which tied the game at 1-1. Herrmann allowed one walk and matched his career-high of seven strikeouts.
The Captains took a 3-1 lead against Hickory starter Jared Hughes (3-3) in the second inning when P.J. Hiser led off with a single, stole second, and came home on Mike COnroy's double. After a two-out walk to Juan Valdes, Conroy then came home on a double steal attempt. Valdes was out at second, but Conroy scored ahead of the play on Valdes at second.
Ramirez came up again in the third and laced an RBI single off Hughes. Ramirez was 2-3 in the game.
Herrmann left after six and got relief help from Matt Loberg and Mark Jecmen. Loberg threw two scoreless frames, and Jecmen finished with a perfect ninth.
The Captains and Crawdads will meet in game two of the series Saturday night at 7:05. RH Jeff Stevens will bring a six-game winning streak into the game. RH Blair Johnson will start for Hickory. The first 2,000 fans will receive a set of Captains baseball cards, courtesy of Lake Hospital System.
