Shoemaker Placed on Disabled List

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 16, 2011) - The Winston-Salem Dash announced today that OF Brady Shoemaker (oblique) has been placed on the disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, C Luis Sierra has been sent to Winston-Salem from AA Birmingham.
Shoemaker joined the Dash on July 27, but because of official scoring procedures actually made his debut for Winston Salem almost one month earlier. Monday's first game was made up as part of a game suspended from June 28, and Shoemaker went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. He played in 19 games with Winston-Salem and hit .273 with 12 RBI.
A 19th round selection in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Shoemaker played baseball at Indiana State University. He played on the same ISU squad as current Dash players Nick Ciolli and Jake Petricka. Shoemaker and Ciolli were both drafted in 2009, the same year that the two were tied for the team lead in RBI, and were 1-2 on the Sycamores and batting average (Ciolli hit .401 to Shoemaker's .389). Shoemaker, Ciolli, and former Dash catcher Josh Phegley were all either born in or currently reside in Terra Haute.
Sierra rejoins the Dash for the third time this season. In two stints with Birmingham over 11 games he hit .262 with six RBI. He played in 50 games for the Dash and was hitting .202 with three home runs and 17 RBI. He began the season as a backup catcher, but played more at second and third base in June and July. Sierra will begin his second stint with AA Birmingham after he was promoted there on June 6. He returned to the Dash three days later. He had a career year offensively in 2010, hitting .293 (84 for 287) with five home runs, 41 RBI, 17 doubles, two triples, and 48 runs scored in 79 games, all with Winston-Salem. The Colombia native is in his second full season as a catcher after the White Sox converted him from a full-time infielder.
