Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- LHP Miguel De Los Santos (4-3, 3.24) at LHP Drake Britton (1-12, 7.14) -
INJURY REPORT: Down the stretch in the Carolina League season, the Pelicans have had a series of injury notes over the last week. Down in Arizona, third baseman Mike Olt is recovering from his broken collarbone suffered in a home plate collision against Winston-Salem on June 6 at BB&T Coastal Field and is playing in rehab games for the AZL Rangers. Sunday, Olt, the seventh-best Rangers prospect entering the year according to Baseball America, played in his first contest and blasted a three-run homer in his first trip to the plate in Rookie ball. After going hitless in his next two at bats, the University of Connecticut product departed after his five scheduled innings in the Rangers' eventual 6-1 win. Monday, Mike played seven innings in a 9-1 Rangers win over the AZL Athletics and went 2-for-5 with a run scored and another batted in before exiting. Olt left the Pelicans in early June with a .286 average, ten home runs, 34 runs batted in, and a .903 OPS. His homer total still leads all Pelicans hitters, as does his OPS. Olt is expected back with the team for the Pelicans' upcoming homestand. Shortstop Leury Garcia sublexed his left shoulder diving for a Brian Peacock groundball back up the middle in the bottom of the first inning Saturday night at Potomac. Garcia, who hasn't been placed on the disabled list yet, is not expected to return to the lineup this week. Starting pitcher Barret Loux was placed on the DL on Monday with arm fatigue as he nears 120 innings in both Carolina League and spring action in his first full professional season out of Texas A&M. First baseman Chris McGuiness could also return to the team in the next two weeks. McGuiness, recovering from a meniscus injury in his knee, is also down in Arizona preparing for his return. Acquired from the Red Sox in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade at the MLB deadline a year ago, McGuiness hasn't seen game action since July 6 and has only played in 46 games this year thanks to back, oblique, and knee problems. When fully healthy at the beginning of the season, however, McGuiness batted .321 through his first 14 games with seven runs batted in and an .820 OPS. He was named the Rangers' Minor League Defender of the Month for April after a perfect, errorless month in the field.
WELCOME, NEW GUY: First baseman Andrew Clark announced his arrival in the Carolina League in a big way Sunday at Potomac. Clark, promoted to Myrtle Beach on August 14, was in the fifth spot in the lineup in his first day with the club and smashed a two-run tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning en route to the Pelicans' 5-2 series-concluding win over the Potomac Nationals. Clark later singled and scored the Pelicans' final run of the afternoon. Monday, Clark doubled home a pair of runs in the Pelicans' three-run fifth at Salem and worked a bases-loaded walk one inning later to drive home his third.
CREIGHTON NEW JAYS: The newest Pelican into the lineup is Monday night's starting third baseman and leadoff man Jimmy Swift. An undrafted free agent this year, Swift's June signing made him the sixth former Creighton Blue Jay to join the Rangers organization in recent years, joining Adam Schaecher (2006), Chris Gradoville (2007), Vicente Cafaro (2009), Carson Vitale (2010) and Trever Adams (2011), a current member of the Spokane Indians (SS). The Rangers' connection to the Omaha, Nebraska baseball power is Senior Director of Player Development Scott Servais. Servais, a three-year starter at Creighton in the mid-80s, was coached in college by current Chicago Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry. Servais was inducted into the university's athletic hall of fame in 2003. The 1988 Olympic gold medalist keeps close ties to Creighton through his uncle, Ed Servais, who is currently the school's head baseball coach. In addition to Creighton's products, the Servaises have been able to keep tabs on other promising Missouri Valley Conference products like Indiana State's Ryan Strausborger.
