Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday night by beating the Peoria Chiefs, 4-2, in front of 14,249 fans at Elfstrom Stadium, the sixth-largest crowd in franchise history and biggest of the season. Jeff Baisley blasted his 20th home run of the season with a three-run shot that gave the Cougars a lead they never relinquished and certified Trey Shields' 10th win of the year.

Peoria scored single runs in the first and fourth against Shields, who left after five innings in line for a 2-0 loss because Chicago Cubs pitcher Wade Miller, making a rehabilitation start for the Chiefs, tossed four shutout innings.

Then Joel Santo took over in the fifth, and the Cougars, who hadn't scored a run in their last 18 innings, came alive. Raul Padron walked, and Wes Long was hit by a pitch before Justin Sellers sacrificed the runners along. After Frank Martinez bounced into a fielder's choice, Baisley belted the three-run shot. His 20th round-tripper puts him fifth all-time on the Cougars' single-season list, and his 93 RBIs now tie him with Kevin Millar for fifth-most in franchise history.

Martinez singled home Padron in the seventh for an insurance run, as the Cougars received three scoreless relief frames from Ron Madej and a near-flawless ninth by Brad Kilby, who saved his fifth game. Shields (10-8) was the victor, and Santo (1-2) hooked the loss.

The Cougars (25-18) and Chiefs (22-21) play against Sunday afternoon at 2 CT, as Vince Mazzaro (8-8, 5.06) duels against Mitch Atkins (10-3, 2.52).
