Burlington Bees News Release
Dayton, OH - For the second straight night, the Burlington Bees (17-26, 52-58) scored a run in the ninth inning and had the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but came up short. Tonight, the Bees had runners on first and second with one out, but pinch-runner Valentino Arce was doubled off on a line drive by Ethien Santana to end the game as the Dayton Dragons (22-20, 57-55) held on for a 4-3 win at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons are now 5-0 against the Bees this year.
The Dragons never trailed in the game as they struck for three runs in the bottom of the second against Bees' starter Matt Kniginyzky. Adam Rosales singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a flyout. After getting a groundout, Kniginyzky threw his second wild pitch allowing Rosales to score for the first run. The right-hander then hit Craig Tatum with a pitch, allowed a single to Eric Eymann, and Josh Holden drove them both in with a triple off the wall in deep right-center. Kniginyzky settled in after that and didn't allow any more runs through the sixth.
The Bees struggled early against Dragons starter Carlos Fisher, but broke through in the fifth. Jeff Howell singled and scored from second later in the inning on a two-out hit by Omar Pena. With the score still 3-1 in the seventh, Howell singled with one out to knock Fisher out of the game. Brady Everett greeted reliever Derrick Lutz with a single to right that moved Howell to third, and Carlos Arroyo got an RBI as Howell scored and Everett was forced at second base on a slow grounder to the right side.
Kniginyzky (8-4) came back out for the bottom of the seventh and with one out, Eymann ripped a solo homer to left-center for a valuable insurance run. After a base hit by Gerardo Cabrera, Chris Hayes replaced Kniginyzky, got out of the inning, and set the Dragons down in order in the eighth.
Lutz pitched a scoreless eighth to set up Damian Ursin for a save opportunity in the ninth. Howell led off with a flare down the right field line that BJ Szymanski dove for and missed allowing Howell to leg out a triple for his season-high fourth hit of the game. Everett followed with a single to drive in Howell and get the Bees to within one. Arce ran for Everett and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arroyo. Pena then hit a slow bouncer to third that went off Eymann for an infield single, but didn't advance Arce. Santana was next and Ursin picked up his fourth save when the Dragons turned the double play. Fisher (9-5) got the win.
The Bees and Dragons continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 Central Time at Fifth Third Field. RH Chris Nicoll (4-7, 2.82) will start for the Bees against RH Daniel Guerrero (2-3, 5.27). The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 12:40.
