Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

It may have been Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz who said ‘There's no place like home' and the Cedar Rapids Kernels would have to agree as they kicked off an eight-game homestand with a 4-3 come from behind win over Lansing on Saturday night.

Heading into the bottom of the 9th inning, the Kernels trailed Lansing 3-2. This season, the Kernels are 1-42 in games where they trailed after the 8th inning. Flint Wipke drew a two out walk and was replaced by pinch runner Stantrel Smith.

Madison Edwards ripped the first pitch from Edward Rodriguez into the right field gap for a triple, scoring Smith to tie the game. Brad Coon came up and lined a single into the right field corner to bring in Edwards with the game wining run and send the McDonald's Jersey Night crowd of 4,493 home with a win.

The win snaps the Kernels five game losing streak and improves their second half record to 19-23. Lansing falls to 17-26.

Coon finished the night 3 for 4 with two doubles and Larry Infante had two hits.

Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza pitched six innings and gave up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Chris Howell pitched two innings of scoreless relief, giving up only one hit and striking out one. Darren O'Day (2-0) picked up the win as he struck out two.

Lansing reliever Edward Rodriguez (1-2) was tagged with the loss.

The Kernels and Lugnuts square off for game two of their four game set on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm as Andy Hill (3-8) starts for the Kernels and Aaron Tressler (8-4) starts for Lansing.

Sunday games are always 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Fun Days as fans can enjoy $1 popcorn all game and get autographs from the Kernels on the concourse from 1:20 until 1:40 pm. After the game, fans can go onto the field and run the bases, thanks to St. Luke's and Velocity Sports Performance.

The Kernels will also recognize the 2006 Cedar Rapids Baseball Hall of Fame Class including Ron Hunt, Paul Snyder and Chuck Fulton in a ceremony before the game. Gates open at 1 pm and tickets are available by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am.
