Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

After scoring eight times in the 12th inning for a win on Friday night in Lansing, the Swing of the Quad Cities carried that momentum back to Davenport on Saturday night, as they defeated the Clinton LumberKings 6-2 in the homestand opener at John O'Donnell Stadium. Jon Jay led the offensive attack with a 4-for-5 night, while 2006 first-rounder Adam Ottavino earned his first win in a Swing uniform.

Quad Cities (25-17, 59-51) improved to eight-games above .500 for the first time this season, as the Swing have gone 20-6 at John O'Donnell Stadium since June 6 and 13-4 since the All-Star break. Clinton (11-32, 34-78) sinks to 14.5 games behind the first-place Swing in the Midwest League-West, and will have to contend with rehabbing Cardinals' southpaw Mark Mulder in a 5:00 p.m. game on Sunday evening.

The ballgame was scoreless heading into the fourth inning, when Ottavino's ability to work out of trouble allowed Quad Cities to take control of the game.

Consecutive singles opened the top of the fourth, and the Cardinals' first-round pick (30th overall) out of Northeastern University suddenly found himself in a first-and-third, nobody-out jam. Jon Mayberry's pop out to left field was not deep enough to score the runner, and after a walk to load the bases Ottavino struck out Ian Gac swinging for a big second out. He then induced a fielder's choice groundout from Truan Mehl, preserving the scoreless tie and giving his offense a chance to rally.

The Swing responded in the bottom half of the inning by taking a lead they would not relinquish. Jon Jay led off the frame with a single and moved to second when Terry Blunt fumbled the ball in left field. He scored easily when Mark Hamilton blasted an opposite-field double that one-hopped the wall in left. Hamilton was at third base later in the inning when Bryan Anderson checked in with a run-scoring groundout, giving Quad Cities a 2-0 lead.

That margin had been cut to 2-1 when the Swing went back to work in the fifth. Daryl Jones got it started with his second hit of the game, a groundball double inside of the first base line. He was at third base with Shane Robinson at second and one out when Jay lined an RBI-single to right that put men on the corners. After a pitching change, Robinson scored on a wild pitch before a groundout by Hamilton plated Jay for a 5-1 lead.

Quad Cities was ahead 5-2 when they capped the scoring in the seventh. Jay's fourth hit of the ballgame opened the inning, and the Swing loaded the bases with nobody out after Hamilton walked and Tyler Greene singled. The Swing only managed one run out of that situation, as Jay trotted home on a one-out wild pitch, but that was plenty to secure the 6-2 victory.

Ottavino (1-1) snagged his first win with Quad Cities in his third start, holding the LumberKings to just three hits while fanning two over 5.1 innings. He got into trouble at times thanks to six walks, as both of the runs he allowed were scored by hitters that had drawn free passes.

Kevin Altman (1-7) was tagged with the loss in just his second start of the season. The former reliever coasted through the first three frames without much turbulence, but was roughed up for five earned runs over his final 1.1 innings of work. He struck out five without issuing a walk, but gave up five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.

UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will continue their eight-game homestand against the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday with a little help from a two-time all-star on a rehab assignment from the St. Louis Cardinals.
