Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
The PawSox scored exactly one run in each of the first two games played in this series, beating Columbus 1-0 on Thursday and losing 2-1 last night. It looked to be the same story tonight, as the Clippers carried a 6-1 lead to the bottom of the eighth.
In rapid fashion, however, the PawSox offense awoke for six runs to steal a 7-6 victory. Bubba Bell struck the big blow with a three-run double, and Gil Velazquez, Angel Sanchez, and Ryan Shealy drove in a run apiece to help deliver the victory.
After a scoreless first two innings, Columbus brought home the first two runs when Michael Brantley led off the third with a home run and then Jordan Brown, aboard with a one-out double, came around on a single from Matt LaPorta. The PawSox scratched out a run in their half on a leadoff walk to Niuman Romero, a stolen base, and an RBI single by Sanchez.
The game remained close until the sixth, when the Clippers plated four more runs to blow it open. Wes Hodges homered to left to lead things off, and after two singles and a sacrifice bunt, Jose Constanza singled to right to plate Jared Goedert and make it 4-1. After recording the second out, starter Adam Mills gave way to Chad Paronto (3-5), who promptly allowed Constanza to steal second and then Brian Bixler to single in two more runs. The final line on Mills was six runs on 11 hits and one walk in five and two-thirds innings. He struck out just one.
Columbus starter Aaron Laffey did his best to keep the PawSox in the game, walking seven batters on top of five hits in five and two-thirds innings. PawSox batters left men on base in each of the first six innings, though, and could not land another blow against Laffey or reliever Carlton Smith, who finished the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.
Jeremy Sowers (1-4) came on for the eighth, and the PawSox bats got to him immediately, loading the bases with nobody out on a walk to Aaron Bates and singles by Josh Reddick and Dusty Brown. The first RBI single, from Velazquez, made it 6-2, and then Bell's bases-clearing double brought the PawSox within one. After Romero bunted Bell to third, Tug Hulett chased Sowers from the game with another walk.
Sanchez singled off Jeff Todd, though, and then Ryan Shealy doubled over Brantley's head in center to plate Hulett and give the PawSox the lead. Sanchez was thrown out at home trying to score as well and Bates, the tenth batter of the inning, then grounded out to end the inning.
Paronto was the surprise winner in relief, while Fernando Cabrera picked up his eighth save in place of regular closer Robert Manuel, who was called up to Boston earlier today. Catcher Dusty Brown celebrated his 28th birthday by walking twice. Regular first baseman Lars Anderson, mired in an 0-29 slump, sat the game out.
The PawSox try to make it three of four against Columbus tomorrow at 1:05 at McCoy as Kris Johnson (3-5) takes the hill against Carlos Carrasco (5-3).
