Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves dropped tonight's contest 2-0 at the hands of the Syracuse Chiefs in front of a season-high 9,257 fans at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves (31-38) have now been shut out in three straight games for the first time in franchise history, and it is the first time a Braves Triple-A franchise has had three consecutive shutouts hung on them since Richmond was victimized from 5/31/05-6/2/05 at Rochester. Gwinnett drops into 3rd place in the International League South for the first time since 4/25 at 9.5 games behind division leader Durham. Syracuse (41-29) moves 1.5 games up in 1st place in the IL North.

It Was Over When: Gwinnett couldn't cure the shutout jinx. The G-Braves have now gone their last 23 innings without scoring a run, stranding 21 runners on base in the process.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Atlanta Braves RHP Jair Jurrjens made his second MLB rehab start of the homestand, going 4.1 IP and allowing 8 hits and 2 R/ER. He also walked just 1 while striking out 4 and yielding a HR. He threw 79 pitches - 53 of those for strikes.

At the plate: LF Matt Young went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, giving him a team-high 11 steals. One game after having his season-high hitting streak snapped (12 G), 3B Wes Timmons also finished 2-for-3.

The opposition:

On the Mound: Chiefs starter, LHP Matt Chico, went 6.1 IP without allowing a run. He yielded 6 hits, but didn't walk a single batter as he struck out 4 on the night.

At the plate: First baseman Chris Duncan spoiled Jurrjens' start with his two-run homer in the 2nd inning, finishing 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. Chico pitched in as well, finishing 2-for-3 with 2 singles to help his own cause. RF Kevin Mench was 2-for-4.

On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Syracuse tomorrow afternoon at Coolray Field at 2:05 p.m., wrapping up their six-game series. The G-Braves will send their second straight Atlanta Braves pitcher to the hill, this time RHP Takashi Saito (No Record), to start a game on an MLB rehab. The Chiefs will send RHP Jeff Mandel (2-2, 4.54 ERA) to counter. The game will be broadcast on WDUN-550 AM.
