Shasby's Return Leads Aces Past Thunder 3-1

January 14, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

Matt Shasby was signed minutes before the Alaska Aces hosted the Stockton Thunder on Friday night at Sullivan Arena. Minutes after the game started, he struck for the first goal. In his first game since the 2009 Kelly Cup Finals, Shasby sparked Alaska's 3-1 win to extend the Aces winning streak to eight games, and claim the second game in as many nights over the Thunder. The Aces also extended their point streak to 12 games, one shy of their season high. Alaska improved their league best record to 28-5-5, with a 22-3 home record. The Aces and Thunder conclude their weekend series on Saturday. Tickets are on sale now. With Shasby and newly signed forward Jim Dahl in the lineup, Alaska jumped on the board early. Jacques Lamoureux found Shasby with a cross-ice pass, and Shasby tallied 5:50 into the game from the bottom of the left circle. It marked Shasby's first goal since April 24, 2009 in his first game since June 5 of that year. The Aces peppered the Stockton net, outshooting the Thunder 18-5 in the opening frame.

Alaska extended their lead to 2-0 on a Tyler Ruegsegger rebound at 6:27 of the second period after Dahl's redirection clanked off of the right post. Dahl picked up an assist on the play in his first game since the 2009-2010 season. 61 seconds later Kevin Baker notched his 16th of the year for Stockton from the top of the left circle to get Stockton on the board for the first time in the series. However, that's as close as the Thunder would get.

The third period began with the Aces getting a two minute, two-man advantage after Stockton was assessed a bench minor at the end of the second period, and added another prior to the start of the third. Head Coach Matt Thomas was ejected from the game amidst the intermission break, and Alaska took advantage of the opportunity. Wes Goldie scored on a back and forth pass in the offensive zone with Steve Ward, and buried his 18th of the year at 1:08. The Aces held on to the 3-1 lead with Adam Courchaine playing strong down the stretch to keep Stockton at bay.

Adam Courchaine (11-1-3) earned the win, making 18 saves on 19 shots, while Olivier Roy (7-10-4) made 34 saves on 37 shots, taking the loss. The Aces power play went 1-6, while the Thunder went 0-2. Alaska outshot Stockton 37-19 in the game.

The Aces and Thunder conclude their weekend series on Saturday. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
