Sharks Pick Up Tough Luck Loss
June 14, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
Despite eight strong innings of work and 11 strikeouts from starting pitcher Mat Batts, the Wilmington Sharks (5-9) fell 4-2 to the visiting Thomasville HiToms (6-6) in CPL action Tuesday night.
Batts, who pitches collegiately at UNC-Wilmington, only had two bumps in his road - in the second and third innings.
In the second inning, a leadoff single by Zach Briggs came back to haunt Batts, as Briggs later scored on a groundout by Garrett Koster.
The third inning saw Batts give up another leadoff single, this time to Stephen Carmon, before Jacob Rogers RBI single plated Carmon. Rogers would score two batters later on a RBI double from Tyler Hall.
Thomasville starter J.J. Jankowski was matched Batts pitch for pitch, as he went seven innings and allowed only five hits and two Sharks runs while striking out 13 batters.
Both Wilmington runs came in the final two innings of Jankowski's night, but the Sharks were held to just four base runners through the first five innings of his night.
A leadoff single for K.J. McAllister resulted in the Sharks first run, as McAllister stole second base and scored on an RBI groundout by Kenny Bryant.
In the seventh, Sharks leadoff hitter Alex Freedman opened the inning with a walk before he came around to score on an Evan Campbell RBI groundout.
The Sharks made it interesting in the ninth, putting two on with two outs before Campbell flew out to left field to end the game.
Jake Mayers registered the only two-hit night for Wilmington, who also received a hit apiece from McAllister, Freedman, Russ Stupienski and Casey Allison.
Hall led Thomasville with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, while four other HiToms contributed a hit apiece.
Wilmington hits the road Wednesday night to play in Morehead City before turning around and hosting the Marlins on Thursday night at 7:05. Another road game in Fayetteville awaits the Sharks on Friday before they host Gastonia Saturday night inside the Shark Tank.
