Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins turned the first triple play in the organization's brief history at J. P. Riddle Stadium on Monday night, en route to defeating the Fayetteville SwampDogs and winning their sixth consecutive game.
The baseball rarity occurred in the fourth inning after Dillon Checkal and Eric Grabe of the `Dogs led off the side with back-to-back singles. Marlins third baseman Grant Clyde then fielded a line drive from the bat of Joe Vaskas. Vaskas retired, Clyde bulleted a throw to second base, tagging up Checkal for the second out. Immediately following, second baseman Danny Diekroeger completed the 5-4-3 triple play and retired the side by tossing the ball to first base to send Grabe trotting to the Fayetteville dugout.
The Marlins pitching staff delivered a good nine innings of work to contribute to the win. Chase Wellbrock started the game on the mound for Morehead City, pitching for six innings and giving up one run on four hits. Wellbrock struck out four and did not walk a batter in his outing. Florida International University's Christian Malbrough then put in 1.2 innings of work and gave up one run to set up Tyler Moore, who threw to four batters and recorded the final four outs of the game to pick up his third save of the season.
The offensive performance of the Marlins was steady, producing the four-run difference during the last three innings of the game. Chase McDonald and Zach Stephens smack three base hits each, and Sam Kimmel went 1-for-2, walking three times.
The Marlins will have the day off on Tuesday, returning to "The Rock" on Wednesday to host the Wilmington Sharks. Wednesday will be Little League Night at the ballpark. Children ages 12 and under will get into the game for free if wearing their Little League jerseys! Marlins Poster Giveaway Night as well as Town of Newport Night at Big Rock Stadium. The game is penciled to start at 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6 o'clock.
