Forest City Owls News Release
FOREST CITY, N.C. - The Forest City Owls and Martinsville Mustangs lit up the McNair Field scoreboard on Tuesday night. In the end, the Owls emerged victorious, 10-7. It was Forest City's first victory over Martinsville this season. The Owls improve to 8-6, while the Mustangs fall to 6-7.
Park University's Derek McGowan made his first start in an Owls uniform. He could only muster three innings of action, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits, striking out two batters and walking one. Forest City reliever Ryan Quick earned the victory. Quick allowed just one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Mustangs starting pitcher Ryan Crosby took home his first loss of the season. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits in five innings.
Four home runs were hit this evening, two on each side. Both of Martinsville's jacks came in the second inning. 1B Justin Sizemore led off the second with a solo home run over the left field wall to kick off the scoring. Later on in the frame, catcher Adam Pendleton unleashed a three-run homer that wrapped up a four-run second inning.
The Owls answered in the bottom of the second inning with a round-tripper of their own. With two men on and one out, 2B Jake Watson lofted a three-run home run over the right field wall. Forest City cut the Mustangs' lead to 4-3 after two innings. Martinsville added another pair of runs in the following inning on a Derrick Hopkins RBI double and a John Faircloth sacrifice fly to center that scored Hopkins, boosting their lead to 6-3 after three innings.
Forest City would snatch control of the game in the fourth inning and not look back. The Owls scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Three of those runs came off the bat of DH Konstantine Diamaduros, who crushed his second home run of the season with two runners aboard and two outs. Watson and CF Buddy Sosnoskie also registered RBI singles in the fourth inning. Forest City led 8-6 heading into the top of the seventh.
Although the Mustangs pulled within one run in the top of the seventh frame after another Hopkins RBI double, Forest City added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth off RBI singles by Sosnoskie and Diamaduros to ensure victory. Newcomer Corey Suggs pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit without giving up a run. Suggs notched his first save of the season in his CPL debut.
Watson and Diamaduros each finished with a home run and four RBIs. Watson went 3-for-4 and also scored two runs. Sosnoskie went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. 1B Eric Fisher enjoyed a tremendous CPL debut, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Catcher P.J. Torres had his best game in an Owls uniform, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. LF Cameron Conner got his first hit as a member of the Owls, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored.
