Shark Snap Shot: The Worcester Sharks (23-16-3-2, 51pts) chomped two out of a possible four points in two games last week as the post AHL All-Star break schedule began. Worcester began the week with a 5-4 loss in Providence on Friday followed by a 3-2 win over the Bruins on Saturday in front of 7,760 fans at the DCU Center on Pink in the Rink Night. The Sharks are now 7-1-0-0 vs. the Bruins this season!
Worcester sits in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 51 points (23-16-3-2) and 9th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks ended the month of January with a 10-3-0-1 record to kick off 2015 in style!
Highlights from the week include three point games from Eriah Hayes (1-2-3) and Ryan Carpenter (1-2-3) in the Sharks BIG 3-2 win on Saturday vs. the Bruins. Jeremy Langlois scored twice in Providence on Friday and leads all AHL rookies with 16 goals this season! John McCarthy scored his first goal of the season for Worcester in his 250th game for the Sharks on Saturday and Taylor Fedun added two assists and was +3 in two games last week! Travis Oleksuk picked up his first professional fighting major on Friday while Aaron Dell made 26 saves in his 2nd win of the season on Saturday.
The AHL announced on Jan 30 that the Worcester Sharks are to move to San Jose, CA after the season and join a new Pacific Division for the 2015-16 season. More information can be found by clicking HERE.
Last week saw the first NHL recall for Sharks forward Daniil Tarasov on Jan 28. Tarasov is still with the SJ Sharks but has yet to make his NHL debut. Defenseman Kyle Bigos (Merrimack College) was recalled from the Ontario Reign (ECHL) on Jan 29 and picked up an assist in the Sharks 3-2 win vs. the Bruins on Saturday. As of Feb 3, Matt Tennyson, Melker Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, Mirco Muller, Barclay Goodrow, and Daniil Tarasov are with the SJ Sharks.
The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is forward Eriah Hayes. The 26-year-old from La Cresent, Minnesota recorded three points (1-2-3) and four shots in two games last week to lead the way offensively for the Worcester Sharks.

The Worcester Sharks begin a five game road trip with three games this week.
On Wednesday, the Sharks head to Lehigh Valley to battle the Phantoms at 7:05pm.
On Friday the Sharks battle the Admirals in Norfolk at 7:30pm followed by a 7:15pm start on Saturday vs. the Admirals.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1312 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,648 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4. Coach Sommer is one win away (599 wins) from 600 in his AHL career.

- The Worcester Sharks are in 3rd place (23-16-3-2, 51pts) in the Atlantic Division and 9th place overall in the Eastern Conference.... The Sharks trail the Penguins by just one point (Sharks have two games in hand) for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East.
- The San Jose Sharks currently have 17 players on their roster that have spent time in Worcester (Couture, Desjardins, Pavelski, Sheppard, Wingels, Braun, Stalock, Irwin, Vlasic, Nieto, Mueller, Kennedy, Karlsson Tennyson, Hertl, Goodrow, and Tarasov).
- The San Jose Sharks are in 2nd place in the Pacific Division and 5th place in the Western Conference with 61 points and a 27-17-7 record.
- Welcome back captain!...John McCarthy was reassigned by the St. Louis Blues to Worcester on Jan 14 in exchange for Adam Burish. J-Mac made his return to the Sharks line up on Jan 16 and added an assist. McCarthy ranks 3rd all-time in games played (250) and 5th in goals (55).
- Rookie Chris Tierney has 24 points (7-17-24) in 26 games in Worcester this season and two points (0-2-2) in 14 games for the San Jose Sharks. Tierney ranks 15th in the AHL in rookie points despite playing in just 26 games.
- AHL rookie Jeremy Langlois ranks 8th among AHL rookies with 26 points (16-10-26) in 42 games. His 16 goals are tops among AHL rookies.
- Melker Karlsson has been impressive so far with the San Jose Sharks. Melker has 13 points (8-5-13) in 21 games with San Jose since his recall on Dec 8. He scored his 1st NHL goal on Dec 22 at Anaheim and also had a five game goal scoring streak!
- Daniil Tarasov is 2nd on Worcester with 25 points (10-15-25) in 41 games this season. Daniil is currently on recall with the SJ Sharks and waiting to make his NHL debut.
- Freddie Hamilton is 3rd on the Worcester Sharks with 25 points (9-16-25) in 41 games and has played one game for the SJ Sharks this season (0-0-0).
- Matt Taormina leads all Worcester d-men with six goals in 44 games. Matt picked up his 100th AHL assist vs. the Monarchs on Dec 26 and was selected to play in the AHL All Star Classic where he collected two assists.
- Taylor Fedun leads all Worcester defenseman in points (22) and assists (19) in 44 games. His 22 points (3-19-22) ranks 18th among all AHL defensemen.
- Micheal Haley is 2nd on the club in goal (11), leads the club in fighting majors (8), and tops in penalty minutes (76). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season. Haley ranks 3rd in the AHL with a 23.9 shooting percentage.
- Goaltender Troy Grosenick has a 15-6-1 record in Worcester with a 2.67 GAA and a .905 save %. Grosenick made his NHL debut on Nov 16 and set an NHL record for most saves in a shutout by a goaltender making his NHL debut (45) in the SJ Sharks 2-0 win at Carolina. Troy went 1-1-0 in two starts for the SJ Sharks and is currently in Worcester and is riding a six game win streak and is 8-1-2 in his last 11 starts overall. - Grosenick has missed his last six starts due to injury.
- The Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL with only 10.20 penalty minutes per game and have allowed the fewest amount of power play goals against (20).
- The Sharks have the 2nd most wins (6) when trailing after 40 minutes of play this season - OKC has 7.
- Coach Roy Sommer currently ranks 3rd in the AHL with 599 wins in his career (17th season) and 1st in games coached in the AHL with 1312.

The Worcester Sharks (22-16-3-2, 49pts) opened up the unofficial second half of the AHL season with 5-4 loss to the Providence Bruins (22-17-5-1, 50pts) in front of 7,924 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Friday evening. Jeremy Langlois scored his team leading 15th and 16th goals of the season while Freddie Hamilton and Matt Taormina also scored for Worcester. JP Anderson made 37 saves in net in his 5th straight start for Worcester and Taylor Fedun added two assists. On a conditioning assignment from the Boston Bruins, Niklas Svedberg, made 25 saves in net for Providence and Seth Griffith led the way offensively with three points (2-1-3) as the Bruins defeated Worcester for the first time this season.

The Worcester Sharks (23-16-3-2, 51pts) split the home-and-home series with a 3-2 win over the visiting Providence Bruins (22-18-5-1, 50pts) in front of 7,760 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday night during the 4th annual PINK in the RINK night to benefit the Cup Crusaders in support of breast cancer awareness and research. Ryan Carpenter (1-2-3, +3) and Eriah Hayes (1-2-3, +1) both had three-point games, leading the Sharks to victory. The Bruins' Ryan Spooner (2-0-2) had two goals, which was the only scoring Providence would get for the night. Aaron Dell made 26 saves on 28 shots to get his 2nd win of the year, as Worcester beat Providence for the seventh time this season, giving them their 10th win in the month of January. John McCarthy also scored for Worcester in front of the largest crowd of the season at the DCU Center.

The Worcester Sharks (23-16-3-2, 51pts in 44gp) are in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division; which is nine points behind the 1st place Monarchs (60pts in 43gp), two points behind the 2nd place Pirates (53pts in 46gp), one point ahead of the 4th place Bruins (50pts in 46gp), and six points ahead of the 5th place IceCaps (45pts in 47gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*Quick Strikes (thanks Ballou)... On Oct 29 vs the Pirates, the first-period goals by Matt Tennyson and Micheal Haley, one at 16:37 and the next at 16:53, were four seconds shy of the team record. Garrett Stafford and Tomas Plihal scored 12 seconds apart in the second period on Feb 2, 2007 against Bridgeport at the DCU Center. It was only the fourth time in nine seasons the Sharks have scored goals less than 20 seconds apart.
*Fast start... Evan Trupp scored just 22 seconds into the first period on Dec 6 in St. John's and Bryan Lerg scored 15 seconds in vs. Manchester on Dec 26. Graham Mink holds the record for fastest goal just 11 seconds into the game on March 7, 2008.
*Good Boys... the Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL averaging 10.20 minutes per game....the Sharks have been shorthanded just 141 times this season (3.20 per game) which is the least times shorthanded in the AHL.

*Pro Debuts: Gus Young (Yale) made his professional debut in the Sharks 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates on Oct 26.

*AHL First... Matt Taormina became the first player to score a 3-on-3 OT goal under the new overtime format in the AHL in the Sharks 3-2 overtime win in Binghamton on Oct 11. The goal came at 6:34 assisted by Evan Trupp and Taylor Fedun.
*Deja-Vu (almost).... Dylan Demelo scored at 6:33 of overtime on Oct 18.... Exactly one week after defenseman Matt Taormina scored at 6:34 of overtime on Oct 11.
*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship.... Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013....Travis Oleksuk with University Minnesota Duluth in 2011...Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.... and John McCarthy with BU in 2009.
*Memorial Cup... rookie defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser won the Memorial Cup in 2013 with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) and was named to the 2013 Memorial Cup All-Star Team.

The Sharks' last hat trick had belonged to Dan DaSilva, who scored three times in Manchester during a 5-2 Worcester victory in Manchester on Feb. 14, 2010. Freddie Hamilton scored the first home hat trick in 206 games with three goals in a 5:12 span in the third period in a 4-1 win over the Pirates on Oct 26, 2014. It was the first home hat trick since P.J. Fenton had one on Feb. 28, 2009 in the Sharks' 7-3 victory over Springfield. In all, Worcester players have recorded hat tricks only 11 times in the franchise's 672 games. The Sharks are 11-0 in those games and 1-15-3 in the 19 games in which the opposition has had a hat trick.
*Hat Tricks... the Sharks have two hat tricks this season (Hamilton Oct 26 vs. POR, and Langlois Jan 21 at POR).
* Brothers... Freddie Hamilton is the older brother of Dougie Hamilton, who currently plays with the Boston Bruins.... Rylan Schwartz is the younger brother of Jayden Schwartz, who currently plays for the St. Louis Blues. - Rylan Schwartz is currently playing with the Allen Americans (ECHL).
*Major Bonneau... Worcester Sharks tough guy Jimmy Bonneau has racked up 54 fighting majors in 146games for the Worcester Sharks.
