Worcester Sharks News Release
Lowell, MA -Six consecutive goals by the Sharks secured their first regulation win of the season. Mathieu Darche scored two goals and Nolan Schaefer made 26-saves leading the Sharks to a 2-1-0-1 record. The victory snapped a three game winless (0-1-0-2) stretch for the Sharks who earned a victory in regulation for the first time this season.
The Sharks were plagued by a slow start for the third game in a row surrendering the day's opening two scores to Lowell. The Devils first tally came from Barry Tallackson just 2:03 into the game. Lowell padded their lead with another score at the 8:07 mark on a power play score from Olli Malmivaara. But, with the Sharks needing some offense to get back in the game, they looked to none other than the AHL's leading goal scorer, Mathieu Darche. The Sharks forward scored his 6th goal of the season, extending his streak to five games, on assists from Joe Pavelski and Scott Ferguson while they enjoyed a man advantage. Mike Iggulden added his third goal in the last two games with a deflection power play goal at the 15:19 mark to close out first period scoring. Mathieu Biron and Garrett Stafford assisted on the tally.
The second period saw just one goal scored, coming off the stick of Darche for his second of the night and seventh of the season. Joe Pavelski and Grant Stevenson assisted on the goal giving the Sharks a lead for the second time this season.
Three unanswered goals by Sharks in the third period concluded the offense on the day and secured a 6-2 win for Worcester. Pavelski, Tomas Plihal and Ashton Rome all scored the goals. Plihal's tally, a slap shot along the left wing, was his first of the year while Rome scored his first professional goal with just 6:42 remaining. Lowell goaltender, Justin Parise, suffered the loss with a 26-save performance in his professional debut.
The same two teams will meet in Worcester next Saturday night to continue their 10-game regular season series with a 7pm game at the DCU Center.
The Sharks hit the road again next Friday night for a 7pm matchup at Providence. The game will be broadcast live on NewsTalk 580-WTAG and viewed live on the AHL's official broadband broadcaster, the B2 Network. The Sharks Pre-game Warm Up show will take to the air at 6:30pm.
