Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has assigned defenseman Matt Carkner, goaltender Nolan Schaefer and 2003 first round draft pick right wing Steve Bernier to the Cleveland Barons.
Carkner, who served as the Barons captain for the 04-05 season, contributed 10 points (assists) and led the team with 192 penalty minutes in 73 games in 2004-05. He finished the season as the Barons franchise leader in games played (246) and penalty minutes (746).
During the 2003-04 campaign, Carkner set career highs in goals (2), assists (11), points (13) and +/- (+18). He finished third in the AHL postseason with 39 penalty minutes and he assisted on the game-winning goal in the deciding game three of the North Division Qualifying Round.
Carkner was named the Barons winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year Award in both the 2003-04 and the 2004-05 seasons for his outstanding contributions to the community, which include programs "Carkner's Christmas" and "Clip Carkner's Curls for Cancer". He also served as a chairman on "A Night With the Barons", a fundraising auction for the Doug Dieken Foundation.
Schaefer set a franchise record last season with his fifth career shutout on January 8th against Grand Rapids. He then became the second goaltender in Barons history to lead the team to four consecutive victories. He also stopped an AHL record 14 shooters in the Barons 16-round shootout victory against the Utah Grizzlies. Over the course of the season, Schaefer established a 17-23-1 record with a 2.73 goals-against-average and .907 saves percentage, leading the Barons in appearances (43) and saves (1076).
Bernier was selected by San Jose in the first round (16th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, the six-foot two, 230-pound right wing led the Moncton Wildcats and finished 23rd in the QMJHL with 71 points (35-36-71) in 68 games. He finished first on Moncton in goals (35), assists (36), points (71), game-winning goals (nine) and power play goals (12). His 114 penalty minutes ranked second on the team. Bernier was also named to Team QMJHL in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge, where he scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime vs. Halifax on Dec. 15, 2004.
The Barons will open their 2005-06 Regular Season schedule on the National City Rink located in Quicken Loans Arena on Saturday, October 8th against the Rochester Americans at 7:05pm.
