SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Shannon Szabados turned aside 42 of 44 Mississippi RiverKings shots as the Columbus Cottonmouths (6-7-0) beat the RiverKings (4-6-2), 3-2, Saturday night at the Landers Center. It's the second straight win for the Cottonmouths over the RiverKings, after a 3-2 overtime win last night in Columbus.
The Cottonmouths waisted little time to open the scoring. Just 43 seconds in Bryce Williamson slapped in a rebound at the right circle to make it 1-0 Cottonmouths. Neilsson Arcibal and Matt Gingera got the assists on the game's first goal. After Columbus picked up four of the first six shots in the first few minutes, the RiverKings pepper the Columbus net with 24 of the next 25 shots into the second period, which gave the RiverKings a 26-5 shots advantage. Szabados stood tall to keep the Cottonmouths up 1-0.
Columbus finally tilted the ice briefly in their favor after the midway point of the second and that turned into two quick goals. Williamson got his second of the game, with Arcibal and Gingera again getting assists at 13:55. Just 31 seconds later Kyle Thomas got alone in front and beat Peter Di Salvo for a 3-0 Cottonmouths lead.
The RiverKings finally broke Szabados' shutout bid with 35 seconds to play in the second. Bryon Paulazzo redirected a Dylan Quaile pass past Szabados to pull the RiverKings within two heading into the third. Both sides came up short on power plays in the third period, but the RiverKings made it a one goal game with 2:31 left in the third. Quaile intercepted the puck in the trapezoid, spun a pass in front and found Matt Whitehead between the circles. He slid one under Szabados to make it 3-2.
The RiverKings would pull the goalie and get several more shots, including one just before time expired, but Szabados kept them out to secure a 3-2 win. Mississippi outshot Columbus 44-20 in the game.
The RiverKings are back home December 5 for "Pack the House" for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Tickets are discounted $5 and groups get an additional $2 off and start at just $4 per ticket.
