Mississippi RiverKings News Release

COLUMBUS, GA -- The Mississippi RiverKings (4-5-2) rallied with two goals in the third period, but fell short in overtime, 3-2, against the Columbus Cottonmouths (5-7-0) Friday night at the Columbus Civic Center. The RiverKings briefly took the lead in the third period before the Cottonmouths scored the final two goals to win.

The Cottonmouths struck first in the opening frame. Just 4:55 into the first Nick Curry threw the puck from the bottom of the left circle towards the crease. It bounced in past goalie Adam Courchaine, with Shawn Bates getting the last touch and credit for the goal for a 1-0 lead.

For the second straight game the RiverKings waited until the third period to get on the scoreboard, down 1-0. While on the power play Cody Dion crashed the front of the net. With goalie Andrew Loewen scrambling to get back in position Devin Mantha shot one to the net. Dion tipped it in to tie the game 5:39 into the third. Just 33 seconds later Mississippi took its first lead. With the Cottonmouths out of position in the defensive zone Dylan Quaile ripped one in for a 2-1 lead at 6:12 of the third.

Less than three minutes after the RiverKings grabbed the lead the Cottonmouths pulled even. Matt Gingera took the puck down the left side, went behind the goal line and sent a pass towards Neilsson Arcibal. He redirected it up over Courchaine to knot the game at two at 9:03. Both sides generated chances down the stretch, but both goalies stood the test, bringing the game to overtime.

In the 3-on-3 overtime it took just 23 seconds before Gingera poked home a rebound at the left post to send Columbus to their fifth straight win.
