Shag Fall in Game Five to Hot Rods, 5-1

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem Shag dropped game five of a six game series to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 5-1, Saturday night at Truist Stadium in front of 7,481 fans.

Bowling Green (52-44) got on the board quickly in the first. Brock Jones hit his 12th home run of the year to right field making it 2-0 after half an inning.

The Hot Rods tacked on another run in the third after Carson Williams tripled home a run making it 3-0.

Winston-Salem (46-51) started to cut into the deficit in the fifth. Colby Smelley walked to lead off the frame and Andy Atwood doubled to center putting two runners in scoring position with one out. The Shag got on the board on a RBI ground out from Caberea Weaver cutting the lead to two, 3-1.

In the sixth, the Hot Rods got insurance. Dominic Keegan singled with one out and an error put two runners on for the visitors. With two outs, Blake Robertson singled up the middle and another error allowed for both runners to score building the lead to four, 5-1.

The Shag could not find anything more at the plate and fell 5-1, dropping the series against Bowling Green.

Right hander Josimar Cousin took the loss for Winston-Salem but battled across a season long 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, only three earned, and punching out a season high seven. Toney Locey picked up the win for the Hot Rods while Keyshawn Askew got the save.

The series finale between Winston-Salem and Bowling Green is on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
