PEARL, Miss. - Jeff Malm and Richie Shaffer both went deep as the bullpen held off the Mississippi Braves (71-53/32-23) in a 2-1 win for the Biscuits (59-66/24-31) Saturday night at Trustmark Park.

Victor Mateo (11-9) and Mitch Atkins (5-1) dueled through six innings with no runs scoring in the game until Richie Shaffer came to the plate in the seventh inning. His leadoff home run put the Biscuits on the board while Jeff Malm led off the ninth inning with a home run to give the Biscuits what would turn out to be an extremely valuable insurance run.

Daniel Castro singled to start the ninth inning for the Braves. He scored on a Braeden Schlehuber double to make it a 2-1 game. After a sacrifice bunt moved the tying run to third with one out, the infield came in for the Biscuits. Matt Lollis got Gustavo Nunez to groundout without the tying run scoring. Braulio Lara (3) then entered the game to induce a game ending fly out from Kyle Kubitza.

Atkins was dealt the loss despite through seven innings, allowing only one run with a season-high ten strike outs.

Mateo was not as dominating as Atkins, but he picked up his first win in over a month. Mateo worked around five walks and seven hits through seven innings for his eleventh win of the season.

The series-opener with the Tennessee Smokies is Sunday evening at Riverwalk Stadium. RH Michael Colla will be on the hill for the Biscuits while the Smokies will send RHP Felix Pena to the mound. First pitch is slated for 5:35.
