Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Frederick, MD - Lynchburg's newest starter Aaron Shafer surrendered just one run through seven innings in his second start, third appearance, for the Hillcats Saturday night. His impressive performance paved the way to a close 3-2 win over the first place Frederick Keys.

The Hillcats took the early lead in the top of the first. Todd Cunningham led off with a walk, followed by an Andrelton Simmons single. Phil Gosselin moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and Adam Milligan plated Cunningham with a groundout to second base. Lynchburg went up 1-0 in the first.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, the Hillcats loaded the bases with nobody out. Simmons hit a groundball to the second baseman Garabez Rosa. Rosa's flip to short was dropped by shortstop Jonathan Schoop. One run had already come in when Keenan Wiley rounded third base trying to score after the dropped toss. Wiley was caught in a run down between third and home and tagged out. Meanwhile, Cunningham was at second base and Simmons ran himself too far off first. Simmons found himself in a pickle between first and second and eventually was tagged out as well. Cunningham broke for third as Simmons was tagged and was nearly thrown out but the throw went wide at third base and out of play. Cunningham was awarded home. When the dust settled, the bases were empty, two runs were in and two outs recorded. It was 3-0 Hillcats.

The Keys chipped away with a run in the sixth. Joe Mahoney doubled home Schoop from first.

Things got interesting in the eighth inning with two outs. RHP David Hale, on in relief for the ‘Cats, loaded the bases after retiring his first two batters. LHP Ryan Buchter was called in from the bullpen. Buchter walked in a run before striking out Tyler Kolodny to end the inning. Lynchburg led 3-2 heading into the ninth.

The Hillcats went down in order in the top of the ninth, and Buchter came back out in the bottom of the inning to close the game.

Buchter retired the side in order, striking out pinch-hitter Adam Donachie to end the game.

Aaron Shafer (1-0) started for the Hillcats. He allowed just one run on four hits en route to his first win of the season. Bobby Bundy (6-4) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks, while striking out three in four and two-thirds innings pitched.

With the win the Hillcats evened the series 1-1. The rubber match is set for Sunday night at 6:00pm. RHP Zeke Spruill (4-6) will take the mound for Lynchburg against LHP Nathan Moreau (6-3) for the Keys.

The Hillcats On-Deck Show powered by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 5:40pm. Listen live to all the action on 105.5 KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com
