Kinston Indians News Release
Myrtle Beach hung on for a 6-5 win over Kinston Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win, Myrtle Beach (36-26) is now four games ahead of Kinston (31-29) for first place in the Carolina League Southern Division.
With All-Star Drew Pomeranz on the mound for Kinston, Myrtle Beach went up in the top of the second inning. After back-to-back singles started the inning, a sacrifice bunt and RBI ground out led to a 1-0 Pelican lead. In the top of the third inning, Ryan Strausborger started a two-out rally with a single and a stolen base. After a walk, Jared Prince drove Strausborger home with a run scoring single.
Kinston tied the score in the bottom of the second inning when Casey Frawley hit a two-out, two run home run. The blast to left field was Frawley's team leading eighth home run of the year.
The score would stay tied until the top of the fifth inning. With one out in the fifth, Abner Abreu misplayed a drive in center field, hit off the bat of Mitch Hilligoss. Abreu was charged with an error as Hilligoss made it to second base. After Strausborger walked, Chris McGuiness flew out. With two outs in the inning Prince struck again, this time with a double, plating Hilligoss and Strausborger. Vinny Difazio followed with a single to drive in Prince, giving the Pelicans a 5-2 lead. Pomeranz (2-2) picked up his second loss of the year, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven. His ERA moves up slightly to 2.01.
Kinston would come right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Toole led off with a single. After a one-out error allowed Delvi Cid to reach, Toole came home from third base on a squeeze bunt from Tyler Holt. After another error by shortstop Leury Garcia, Bo Greenwell delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Cid and cut the Pelican led to one run.
After Kyle Landis came in from the K-Tribe bullpen for two scoreless innings, Chris Jones gave up a solo home run to DeFazio in the eighth inning to extend the Pelican's lead back to two. Kinston would add another run in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Cannon would unload a two-out double and Adam Abraham followed with a run scoring single. Holt would go 3-for-4 for Kinston.
Boscan picked up the win for Myrtle Beach, Johan Yan got the save by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
The rubber match of the three game series takes place Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 1:30 pm. Brett Brach will take the hill for Kinston, squaring off against Carolina League All-Star Joe Wieland.
