
Seven-Run Second Dooms Wingnuts

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 10-5 to the El Paso Diablos at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Thursday night.
El Paso broke the game open early, scoring seven runs in the top of the second against Wingnuts' starter Steve MacFarland. With the bases loaded an no outs, Adam DeLeo hit a two-run double to right-center that gave the Diablos a 2-0 lead. Kory Drew followed with a triple to right-center that made it 4-0. Later in the inning, Albenis Machado singled home Drew with El Paso's fifth run. After Machado was caught stealing, Johan Garcia reached on an error by Juan Richardson. Kyle Nichols followed with a two-out, two-run home run to left-center that capped off the early rally.
The Diablos scored another run in the top of the third on a bases loaded walk to Machado. The Wingnuts got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Patterson crushed a two-run home run to left field.
During the game, Patterson was named the Wichita Sports Commission's 2011 Professional Athlete of the Year, an award the Wingnuts have now won two out of the last three seasons.
DeLeo hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to make it 9-2.
RBI singles from Josh Workman and Patterson in the fifth and eighth innings respectively, brought the Wingnuts within five. An error from Josh Horn on Maikol Gonazalez' infield single in the top of the ninth brought in El Paso's final run of the night.
Workman drove in Richardson from third in the bottom of the ninth before El Paso reliever Ray Silva ended the game when Edwin Bellorin hit into a double play.
MacFarland took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, in one and two-thirds innings. MacFarland allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out six.
Brandon Mathes worked four and one-third innings of long relief, allowing two earned runs. Eric Gilliland pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.
Scott Hodsdon earned the win for El Paso, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits in six innings. Hodsdon walked three and struck out three.
With an infield single in the fourth, Jose Duran extended his hitting streak to 12 games. The Wingnuts left 11 runners on base in the loss.
The Wingnuts open a two-game home series versus Kansas City on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Justin Murray will be on the mound against Kansas City lefty Reid Santos.
